A sad newsflash from the Center for Disease control today:

"Overall HIV Diagnoses Fell Among Women, but Rose Among Young Women.

In a study of 25 states in which HIV trends can be examined, the number of women diagnosed with HIV decreased by 9% from 1994 to 1998. However, the number of young women (those born between 1975 and 1979) diagnosed with HIV more than doubled during that period. Among this group, HIV cases attributed to both injection drug use and heterosexual sexual contact increased."

In addition:
"Approximately 2,100 children born with HIV are now teenagers and an estimated 10,000 perinatally infected children will enter adolescence during the next five years."

That's so scary that a mother would be willing to have sex and concieve when she knows she has AIDS. That would be such a terrible life for the child, knowing they're probably not going to even get into their 20's.

Wild,
Considering the time period, most women did not KNOW they had HIV when they conceived or even gave birth to those children. Those teenagers were born thirteen to fifteen years ago.

However, thanks to our truly cruddy healthcare system in this country, that can still happen today, as a lot of lower income women have neither the money, the means, nor the awareness to get HIV testing or sfare sex materials.

This doesn't surprise me at all! So many teens I know are having loads of sex, as well as unprotected sex with multiple partners and anal sex, that AIDS tranmission is bound to increase!
