What is bandwidth and why do you have to pay for it? For Scarleteen does the shop earn all the money needed to pay for it? I love the shop and if I had the money I would buy that shirt with the penis on it. I wonder if I would get sent home.....:P

Bandwidth is what it takes to keep any website running. Basically, the more it's used (i.e., the more posts are made, the more visitors we have, etc) the more it costs. Bandwidth is very expensive, particularly for such a huge site as Scarleteen, and the truth is that most of the time, Miz Scarlet pays for this site out of her own pocket, because the Scarleteen shop and the donations usually don't even begin to cover the bandwidth cost each month.
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be sent through a network connection. Essentially, the Scarleteen site and messageboards are stored on a host computer. When a user (like yourself) requests a page (like by refreshing the ST boards), the host computer sends that information to you. Sending information to thousands of users costs LOTS of money. Make sense?
And no, the shop doesn't make much at all--it makes very, veery little. We don't actually sell the goods ourselves, we are just affiliates of merchants who give us a small percentage of the sales. If you would like to donate to Scarleteen, it would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't have to be a huge amount--even putting a buck in a letter to us would be fantastic. http://www.scarleteen.com/donate.html
