I am 35. I've been having a relationship with a guy for almost 5 years now. We don't live together but spends lots of time with each other. Most of it hanging out at my house and doing the movies/diner bit on the weekends. At the begining it was great (it usually is). Now, it more companionship than anything else. We haven't had sex in months! (Yes I have been fooling around -- a lot.) Tiny things that didn't use to bother me now do. What's funny and confusing is I don't want to break up with him.

Is this a relationship? What are we?

Yes, I'd definitely consider that a relationship. But you're the one who's in it, so let it be whatever you want it to be.

No one besides your friend and yourself can tell what sort of relationship you two have together. If you're confused about what to call it, maybe you should talk about with him about it. Just sit him down and say, "Hey, you know what? I'm kind of confused as to what we're doing... Is this a relationship? Or are we just friends?" Chances are if you're confused, he is too. And since you guys are close, it shouldn't be considered awkward to talk about it.

Good luck!

I'm with Mary. Sitting down and talking with this guy sounds like something you should try.

"Relationship" is an incredibly subjective term, and of late I've gotten in far too many arguments with random people as to whether or not I am in a relationship (because Lord knows *I* had no idea, but they all had their opinions), and the only solution was to sit down with the person in question and say "OK, what is this?"

It's a very awkward conversation to have, but if you have been involved (in some way, shape, or form) for that long, your comfort level with him is probably pretty high and it won't be too hard. Ultimately, the only people who can decide whether you are in a relationship is *both* of you, together. Yeah.
