I debated about where to put this for several minutes, and decided this was the place.

Has anyone heard about the urine powered battery that scientists in Singapore have apparently invented? Here are two of the better articles I found:

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7850

Does anyone else think this is a hoax, or a clever trick? Or could this possible take over pregnancy tests and diagnostics as we know it?

Looking at the sites just now, they seem legit. Although there are convincing fake sites, it's very possible this battery could exist. There have been stranger things. At one point, we never thought machines could take over work that humans do.

It doesn't sound like they want to use this battery for pregnancy tests, just to run other tests, such as diabetes. I'm not sure I really understand how it would work, but if it could kill two birds with one stone (testing and powering the testing device), it sounds like it might be worth a try. Plus, urine tests for diabetes would be much less painful and easier to conduct. My father has diabetes and he pricks himself with a needle numerous times everyday, so often that he noticed a change in the consistancy of his blood. He says it's much thinner now.

As a side note: sometimes scientists will claim that they've invented or found somethine without proof of it. For instance, many companies claimed to have cloned the first animal before one company actually had evidence. Until something concrete comes out, we shouldn't get our hopes up.
