I often feel left out whenever my relatives come to stay. It's usually just my and my mother, so I know I've never exactly had to compete for anything. I'm pretty passive and reserved anyway, but my little cousins are very loud and boisterous so automatically get all the attention.

I feel I'm often overlooked, talked over, and just don't 'click' with my relatives as people, whereas everyone else gets on fine. There's a fairly significant age gap between the adults, me and my cousins, so there's never anyone my age to hang out with.

It's kind of a vicious circle, because whenever this happens, I retreat into my room or wherever to have my own space for a bit, but I'm fully aware that this is couter-productive and is just driving more of a wedge between me and my family. Nobody exactly wants to be in the presence of a sulky 18-year-old, do they?

I feel I have to be this hyper, bouncing-off-the-walls type in order to get noticed, which just isn't me! I'm not at all trying to say that I should be the one in the limelight all the time - I don't like to be anyway - I just want to be a proper member of the group.

Or maybe I just have 'spoilt brat syndrome', I don't know.

Is this something you've ever talked about with any members of your family?
