So for the past three to four days I've had this horrible itching, burning pain in my genitals that seems to be localized to my inner labia. I've made an appointment for Tuesday with my ob/gyn, but the pain is very nearly unbearable and I was considering buying some topical something or other for relief of symptoms until then. It's Sunday and the doctor's out of her office today, so I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions. I'm experiencing pain with urination and if I'm say, sitting cross-legged and the heel of my foot presses into my crotch, it burns like fiery hell. The only person I've had sexual contact with in the past two months was screened for STDs in October and I've been his only partner since then (as far as I know)

If you are having pain and burning genitally as well as with urination and it's been really bad for days, the best option would be to see if you can't get seen far sooner.

Might there be any urgent care centers near you? That could be another way to get seen -- and get relief -- faster.

Hey Heather,

I took your advice on Sunday and went to my local urgent care. They determined that it was a yeast infection and told me to avoid overly sugary foods and buy a three day Monistat regimen.

The first day it was like a chorus of angels in my pants- total symptom relief. However, yesterday (my second dose) I had some return of burning and itching. Is that normal? I also started my period yesterday, which my doctor said could be part of what caused the yeast infection in the first place. I also started a new pill recently (loestrin). Could that have affected it?

For some people, hormonal birth control changes discharge enough that things like yeast infections occur more easily, so your pill might have something to do with it. Changes throughout your cycle may also play a role.

It's not unusual for treatment to take a few days to work totally - sometimes up to a week - so give it some time. If you finish the treatment though, and still aren't feeling much better, head back to the doctor. It may be that you need a stronger treatment, something prescribed for you instead of over-the-counter.

You say you're on your period, so you'll also want to avoid tampons this time around. If you can find them, all-natural pads (as opposed to the mainstream ones) might help as well; they're unscented and without a lot of the strong chemicals most brands have, which can contribute to irritation.
