Hi there [Smile] I recently discovered this site and have been lurking around for a while but made an account about 2 minutes ago. So basically I'm up now at 3.40am with school tomorrow and I'm sick of.. well, being sick all the time.

My parents smoke inside. They have been doing so my whole life. As a result me and my brothers have been breathing it in for years, as well as my sister (who smokes now). For the last six months at least, I've been waking up every morning with cold-like symptoms (sneezing, sore throat, coughing, itchy eyes) and get them randomly during the day, as well as having an ongoing cough. It's the norm for me now waking up and sneezing, coughing, and blowing my nose. Because my school jersey is wool, the smell clings to it as well and everytime I get a smell of it I start to sneeze, my record being 17 sneezes in a row :3 It's only recently started bothering me more than usual when I wake up during the night with these too (like right now, I can't sleep because of my blocked nose and itchy eyes.. did I mention it was 3.50am and I have school tomorrow?)

So basically I'm asking if this is all caused by second-hand smoke? I'm not blaming it, or trying to offend anyone that smokes, I'm just wondering if that is the cause. And if so, how badly has it affected me?

Thanks [Smile]

I don't really know if Scarleteen is the source you want to go to with these questions. This site is about sexual education and health, it doesn't really cover the affects of second-hand smoke. But, hey, maybe someone on here can help you.
Smoking can definitely mess up your health, specifically your lungs, and the same can be said with second hand smoke. This sounds pretty severe though, so I would suggest going to see a doctor about it.

Welcome! [Smile]

Alas, this really isn't related in any way to sexuality, sexual health or relationships, so is a question best posed to your general physician.

That said, secondhand smoke is documented to have health effects, so this may well be an issue for you. Six months is a long time to be sick like this without seeking out healthcare, so do you have a doctor you can see, or a general clinic? If so, I'd suggest you do that.

Yeah I know I'm sorry, I have more sexual health related questions I want to ask but I'm going to wait a bit incase they fix themselves [Smile]

Nah I don't have a doctor or a general clinic. I was just curious, and sick of not being able to sleep :/ Thanks anyway [Smile]

No need to be sorry, just not an area where we're really qualified to give a lot of information.

Am I understanding that you don't have any kind of access to any ind of healthcare? If so, especially given you've been sick for so long, that's something you'll want to try to remedy.

Do you want some help with that?

Nah not really. Our school used to have a health nurse every week but she doesn't come anymore, because it's so close to the end of year.

Sure, that'd be great [Smile]

A good place to start would be at this public health website for New Zealand (I assume that's where you are): http://www.everybody.co.nz/page-6080df68-d357-48f4-b2af-462481c30052.aspx

They list an intake phone line there -- 0800 611 116 -- that can help you find out where to get the care you need.
