I've heard that you don't want to shampoo too frequently as it can reduce your natural oils, or even cause too much oil production to compensate. A couple times a week as opposed to every day or multiple times per day.

But my question is, what if you're an athlete? If I go to the gym, or am in the ocean, or play a sport, and I'm sweating from running, etc., I feel like I should shampoo my hair! Also, to wash out any gel, pomade, or whatever I may have used to style my hair.

I don't know what I should be more concerned about - damage from washing it too much, or getting clogged pores (and then losing hair or balding from a dirty clogged scalp that chokes the life out of my hair!) from not properly washing it enough.

Any solution or advice for this???

You probably would not want to wash your hair with shampoo multiple times a day, so perhaps night showers would be better for you so you can get all the dirtying-up (so to speak) done in the day and not have to bathe twice, (if that's an issue).

I've never heard of getting clogged pores from not washing hair, but you're not likely to damage your hair from shampooing it everyday. If scalp dryness is an issue, what hairstylists generally tell their clients is that there is no need to wash your scalp, really-- wash the ends of your hair and the water will take care of what excess oil is at the top.

Honestly, I play sports and work out almost everyday. But if I wash my hair everyday, it dries out and frizzes badly. One day's worth of sweat is not going to make your hair a rat's nest. Personally, I'd advise against shampooing hair daily. But if you absolutely must run some water through it, then rinse it thoroughly and then use conditioner. Shampoo 3 or 4 times a week.

Just an FYI? We ask that Scarleteen not be used for appearance-based questions like this.

This isn't a relationship, esteem, health or sexual health issue, and those are the kinds of places our focus needs to stick to, okay? Thanks!
