So I was watching Law and Order:SVU the other night and one of the characters had severe liver damage from binge drinking. The show described that as 4-5 drinks of hard liquor in an hour. My girlfriend also told me that binge drinking involves vomitting.

When I drink, if I only have a little bit I get very intorverted and depressed, which really isn't fun in any situation. If I have more, I get giddy, which I enjoy. So I usually have 3 or four shots in quick succession (like, 4 in 5 minutes, quick) so that I don't have to deal with the depressing mood and go straight into the giddy part.

Is what I'm doing considered binge drinking? I've never vomitted from drinking, and am careful to keep myself hydrated.

Also, is there any way to estimate how much damage my liver has received? I've done this sort of drinking four times.

Tossing back a handful of shots in one breath just isn't healthy, period. Hydtration won't counteract that.

Four times of doing this didn't likely do big damage to your liver, but it didn't help it, either.

Do yourself a favor: sip alchohol slowly, drink in moderation. You want to feel giddy in the head, all supa-crazy? Spin in circles, do somersaults down a hill, or hang upside down on some monkey bars. If sipping and drinking moderately isn't pleasant? Easy-peasy: don't drink.

(A binge, for the record, is doing a LOT of something in a short period of time. One doesn't need to vomit to binge: sounds like your girlfriend is saying what she is because of what she's heard about bulemia/binge eating, and making some assumptions.)

from the CDC
quote:
Binge drinking is generally defined as having 5 or more drinks on one occasion, meaning in a row or within a short period of time (Naimi, 2003). However, among women, binge drinking is often defined as having 4 or more drinks on one occasion (NIAAA, 2004) (Wechsler, 1998). This lower cut-point is used for women because women are generally of smaller stature than men, and absorb and metabolize alcohol differently than men do.
so yes, 3 or 4 shots in rapid succession is considered bingeing. let's cut back on the booze because liver disease really sucks -- you're pretty screwed on a transplant list unless you're famous like David Crosby or wealthy like a Saudi prince.
