Is it true that "holding it in" can cause urinary tract infections?

I take it you mean trying not to pee. Cos if I got that wrong this could be interpreted way off...
But I have heard of cases of people dying from holding their urine for greatly extended periods of time (but we're talking like 16 hours here in a pretty malnourished child). Generally though, it is advisable not to resist the urge to urinate due to the increased likelihood of causing a UTI. So common sense - when you need to go, find a toilet asap. Holding it in that long won't be a problem.

lol, i only ask because friends have nagged me before on hikes (i hate peeing in the woods!) and i was hoping to disprove them [Big Grin]
