the area around my thigh joints, where the thighs meet the genital area. i can't really do anything about it, i've tried exfoliating it a bit. is this normal?

I've got no scientific studies to point you to but going from plain old talk, it's pretty much acknowledged that skin's darker in that area. Nobody's going to have completely even coloring everywhere on their body anyway, so unless you've got moles that change shape or something, you shouldn't worry about it.

This is completely normal, and I assure you that the vast, vast, vast majority of people in the world have different pigmentation in the skin around their genitals.
