I thought I'd make this thread, inspired by luscious_leslee, so that people can discuss how they take care of their skin and what works for them. Also, if someone has a few worries about taking care of their skin, they see if anyone has some advice to offer.

Also, feel free to use this to say what you LIKE about your skin.

I have to stress though that it's important that this discussion is restricted to over-the-counter skincare products that have been tested for safety- for anything else, you should really see your doctor or dermatologist before trying, to be on the safe side, remembering that none of us here have such qualifications.

Basically i just wash my face morning and night with a cleanser in the shower and when I get out, tone and moisturise. My skin is pretty good, I dont usually get pimples and when i do it is only one or two at a time. I also drink a lot of water.

I use Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser, which I've found that many dermatologists approve of, and it's good for people with sensitive skin too. Then I apply a product with benzoyl peroxide (5% or more) to blemishes, and apply moisturizer. A simple skincare regime that I really stick to helps keep my skin healthy.

I use my shower in the morning and cold water at the end of the day. Seriously, that's it. I tried some stuff for awhile, but i always ended up getting dry skin and i've decided i dont' really need it. The only thing i do use, is eye make-up remover.

One problem i do have is i have little bumps all over my face. Just small little things you can't even see, but you can feel them. i get them on my arms too, but they don't bother me, and the docter says they aren't any kind of problem, so, eh.

i used to use astringent pads (like oxy, etc) but i found even the sensitive ones would really irritate my skin and dry it out, eventually causing more damage than good. Now o just wash my face with a mild cleanser (clean and clear) once a day, and that's it. i used to use differin (doctor prescribed) b/c i would get smaller zits and it worked pretty well to clear them up and prevent some.

Like Celtic Daisy, I just tend to use water- the few pimples that I get don't bother me enough for me to go out and buy a special product. However, when I was in high school I used to get these tiny little pimples all over my forehead- barely noticable, but annoying. I found that tea-tree oil cream worked very well for those.

For my face, I use moisturizing cold cream (the kind in the big blue tub.) If I've been wearing makeup, or just feel oily and gritty, I use Oxy pads, but never more than once every other day. Then I use an organic cucumber face and body mud for 15 minutes a day, once a week. It's all green and gooey and neat. I have remarkably clear skin on my face so I don't have to worry all that much.

My back, however, is a big problem. It's covered with lots of large, painful pimples that don't seem to go away. I've tried the Neutrogena Clear Body scrub with the little exfoliating microbeads, but it doesn't help very much. I'll probably try another kind, and if that doesn't work, I'll see what my doctor says.

thanks beppie.. to go a little more in depth with this topic... i was spefically asking about eyelids.. the rest of my skin i have no problem with for the most part. my eyelids are just very very oily and i'm not sure what to do about this. i'm afraid to use my astringent on them because of the risk of getting some in my eye.
for general skin care. i myself wash with just water in the morning. i use a mild astringent (neutrogena clore pore i believe), and because i do have some other skin problems i have some percribed meds and such. my doctor had actually told me never to use actual soap on my face because it's too irritating.. thats about it. and a pre-thanks to anyone who may be able to help with my eyelid problem.

I've turned into a bit of a Lush addict recently (I always seem to be plugging them-sorry about that, but it's damn good stuff). For my face, I use Angels on Bare skin exfoliating cleanser, followed by Tea Tree Water toner, every morning. Any spots get half a bottle of tea tree oil chucked on them and tend to die down rather quickly.

Up until a few months ago, I used a normal preservative and chemical packed cleanser, and my skin was crusty and sore and generally unpleasant. Since I've switched to this stuff, which is completely natural with no preservatives, it has been soft and smooth and really, really nice. I'm a very happy bunny. I do honestly believe that, unless it's specifically for something medical, natural products are the best way forward.

So that, combined with drinking a lot of water, not smoking etc., is my skin care routine. It seems to be working. I get a few spots, but nothing bad and they go quickly with the tea tree. And it's strokeably soft. Lovely.

Normally, I use Clinique facial soap in the morning, like when I am in the shower and in the evening I use an exfoliant (can't remember the name) and then an overnight mask.

I don't really get a whole lot of pimples and blemishes, but as someone above said, I have little tiny bumps on the bottom part of my cheeks, close to the jawline. You can't really see them, just feel them, so they don't bother me much. I was just kinda wondering if anyone has any insight as to what they are???

Assuming we have the same kind of thing, my docter told me they were from dry skin, but i tried moisturizing somewhat and it didn't seem to do anything, however, i do think he was right. They kinda disapeer in the summer, but are noticalbe in winter.

ooh, what Ashy described is what my dermatologist calls "chicken skin." I have it, but on me they clear up with good exfoliation, moisturizers and Vitamin A (carrot juice, folks).

As for my idea of skin care, for me, nothing beats body wash (i prefer liquid soaps to bars) and a loofa or sponge. I exfoliate every now and then with some scrubby soap.

and while i'm a brand snob when it comes to makeup, i buy cheap soap. a bottle of Suave at WalMart is less than $2.

Well i have two skin diseases...psoriosus and examma! I know i probable spelled both of them wrong..but ususllay using just regular lotion from the store or bath and body works does NOT work. I have to have special prescribed skin care cream to get rid of whats on my skin, and usually when i apply just regular lotion on my body i break out in a red rash..so i have to use the special lotion which sucks cuz it does not smell good.

For cleansing, I rub olive oil on my face and wipe it off with a warm face cloth(I have very dry and itchy ezcema, and this helps it). I have to use special extra strong moisturiser and I use make up about once a month!

i've had semi-excellent skin all of my life, but upon turning 17 i've gotten more pimples than i'd like. i'm usually lazy concerning skin care, but having nice skin is important to me. so, in addition to taking daily morning showers, i've started washing my face every nite with cetaphil (mentioned in a previous post) & then using Queen Helene's (can be purchased at a chain drugstore OR a health food store- it's real cheap!) mint julep masque for any zits i see appearing or have appeared. i leave the masque on the area overnite, & in the morning it will be dried up or shrunken. it will eventually be completely dried up-- it works absolute wonders, i strongly recommend it. you can also use it weekly as a full face mask left on for 15 min (i must sound like a mint julep mask, pusher). the cetaphil works like magic as well, for dry skin.
good luck my pretties.

I have pretty aweful skin, sometimes its dry, other times super oily, and I have environmental acne (zits caused by changes in weather), I also seem to have not bags, but luggage under my eyes. I use a aprocate (sp?) scrub 2 days a week, and about 3 days a weak I use an avacodo/oatmeal skin mask I got cheap at Wal-mart but it works wonders. And for those not-quite-there zits (ya know the ones that you feel coming but you can't see) I put regular toothpaste on it at night and go to sleep with it on, it dries it out and my skin smells minty frest. I've also tried an egg/honey home-made mask, it works great but its really oozy. If anyone has advice on under-the-eye bags then please tell me because cucumber and plenty of water doesn't seem to help any. Thanks

aria, drink the carrot juice. it's good for you

Just wanted to let you in on a great way to zap zits. Buy a tube of Neosporin (or similar antiseptic, non-iodine ointment) at your local drugstore, pharmacy, chemist, etc. Dab the ointment on your zits before going to sleep. Zits are caused by bacteria in the skin. the ointment kills them off. voila! bye-bye zits! Works great on the big, gooey-looking zits.

well i acually have two skin diseases. Nothing big or contagious and its not noticable if i take care of it. It's psoriasis and eczema. Well anyhow i cant even really use any kinda of skin care product that my doctor doesnt prescribe to me.

Sometimes ill use like bath and body works stuff on my hands or on my legs before a basketball game, but one time i did that and i endd up having a huge rash on both my legs. It's hard, its better to be in the sun for my skin diseases then to be inside, which i found out but it not a problem. when im not on my prescribed stuff i usually use aloe or something like that, it works really good and smells good to.

Recently i've been noticing my face is a little oily. I'm rather uneducated in the skin care area because i'm never noticed much of a problem before, so i was wondering what people could suggest for me. I have no allergies, and dont want anything that'll take a while to do everyday.

Right now i just was my face in the shower, and usually i'm now washing when i come home at lunch, and again before bed because i don't like the oily feeling.

P.S. I am thinking of seeing a dermatologist, but first i'd like to see if i can clear up the problem on my own.

ooh! skin care! i LOVE skin care products. i am obsessed with them and forever trying new ones.

i have combination skin, some areas tend to be dry and some get REALLY oily. i also have a very fair complexion.

right now, i am using (and loving) Mary Kay's Velocity facial cleanser and moisturizer. My mom sells Mary Kay so i always get the hook up on makeup and skin care products (but that doesn't stop me from exploring all the options at the drugstore!)

i usually was never too crazy about the Mary Kay cleansers but this one is really nice. it has very fine exfoliating beads in it, you can barely feel them. i wash my face with every morning in the shower. then i apply a light, oil free moisturizer with sunscreen (the velocity one, sadly does not have sunscreen, so i use it when i know i will be indoors mostly or in the evening).

i wear a little bit of foundation to even out my skin tone and a little mascara and eyeliner and lipgloss. and that is it.

at night, i wash my face with a milder cleanser (right now i'm using Suave Mild Foaming Cleanser. I also love St. Ive's Tea Tree Oil Clarifying Cleanser). then i put on some moisturizer before i go to sleep.

Sometimes, if my skin starts freaking out and i have a strong of breakouts, i will use something stronger like Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. but those usually dry out my face.

i don't have alot of problems with my face and breakouts, but below the neck is a completely different story. i agree those special medicated body washes aren't magic potions, but i tend to have fewer breakouts when i use them than when i don't.

3 things i have learned about healthy skin:
1) you must wear sunscreen!!!
2)eat healthy and drink lots of water
3) don't SMOKE!!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, before anyone else has to learn the "hard way," I thought I'd say:

don't EVER use salt scrub on broken skin!!!

it burns like hellfire! I tried the stuff at Bath and Body Works and I had a cracked and irritated patch on my hand. omg it HURT!!!

Like BJadeT, I have a full Lush regime (supplemented with a few other products) to keep my skin looking purdy. Because it's wintertime, I've instigated the dry-skin combatant regime. When I shower, I alternate using Skinny Dip shower gel, or Red Rooster soap (depending on if I'm stinky, or just in need of a good loofahing.) Then I apply liberal amounts of Potion or Body Shop's Body butter to my skin, to keep it from getting all dried out.

At night when I'm removing my makeup, I alternate using a L'oreal cleanser, or Lush's Sweet Japanese Girl, which is an exfoliating solid facial cleanser. I finish up with a little dab of Draught of Immortality to again keep the flaky skin away, and I am a shining goddess of perfect skin, huzzah!

(I didn't get many zits even when I was younger, but my BCP seems to have stopped even the most occasional breakout. Double huzzah!)

Gummy, a sugar scrub is okay for skin that's suffered some trauma. Mix some plain, white sugar with lotion, or cleanser, or I use creamed coconut because it smells good and is moisturizing. Just generally, it's gentler than salt. I figure that anything that's natural enough is probably something I can make at home.

i was rereading this post and thought it was interesting because i have actually been using some different products than when i posted previously. i LOVE the facial cloth things (i use the oil of olay oily-normal skin kind). i started using them almost exclusively back in september and i switched to something else in november/december and my skin started breaking out. so i went back to the cloths and it calmed down!

they are really gentle and they have a textured side for exfoliating and a soft side to use around your eye area, etc. they don't contain soap. the only problem i guess is that since they are disposable, they do kind of create a lot of waste. any suggestions on something to do with all those little cloths? hehe.

anyway, i started using cetaphil moisturizer with spf 15. winter time makes my skin really dry so i use a lot more of it.

also, i've been slathering on the body lotion because my skin gets so itchy in the winter.

one more thing... i noticed there were a few who posted about their eczema. my sister has eczema, a pretty bad case really, and i feel so bad for her because it is flaring up during the colder months and she is trying different things to find the best treatment. her doctor prescribed some medication but she is still trying to find the right cleanser/moisturizer for her condition. does anyone else who deals with this problem have any suggestions, tips? what do you do to keep flare ups to a minimum? i talked to her last night (i'm away at college) and she told me that she woke up yesterday morning with her eyes swollen shut and a rash all over her face and her first thought was that it was a bad flare up probably due to stress.

anyway... that's all i wanted to say. stay warm!

I have positively horrible skin!
I cleanse twice a day with a mild wash from Neutrogena. I can't use too much more than that because I am allergic to benzol peroxide, found in many acne treatments.

Even though I find my skin to be embarrassing at times, I'm glad my eyes (what I consider my best feature) help to take the focus off of my acne.

Hey I picked this thread up on a link and am a new user so i dunno how old it is, but for the undereye thing, just put two regular silverware spoons in the freezer overnight and lay them over your eyes untill they get warm in the morning. This depends on how long you sleep because if they are in longer for about 8 or 9 hours, I would be cautious of frostbite.

I got this tip from a guy friend.

A good way to control armpit odor is to swab the armpit with some astringent. the astringent kills bacteria on your skin that would otherwise cause the smell. i think this'd be a better deal for people who don't shave their pits, though since astringent is harsh and if it gets on a razor nick, it'll burn mad.

I have really dry skin (especially in northeast winters, ugh) and for the longest time, no matter how much lotion I put on my face it would still look all... flaky. Ew. However, a friend put me onto the secret of exfoliating, which really helps get those nasty dead skin flakes outta there.

I take care of my skin by occasionally (though not on a regular basis) by washing my face with warm water and wild soap. Everyday I use Regular Stridex Facewipes. I used to use Stridex Facewipes for Sensitive Skin with Aloe, but since then I have matured more and my skin has become more tough. Stridex works very well for me. If I didn't use it I don't know what I would do.

As for what I LIKE about my skin, I would have to say that it is tan. I don't lay in the sun for hours or go to tanning booths, though. Just a few days at the beach and pool do it.

Sooo sorry I have been gone for about 2 months now.I have been very busy! Im back and Im soo happy I found this thread.I was just thinkin about making a thread about this!
I usually wash my face in the morning either in the shower or just out of the shower with Noxzema w/ Moisturizers in the morning and at night.
I have good skin.THANK GOD!! I am so mean to my skin.It should be paying me back for not taking good care of it.I have tried the face masks but they didnt do a WOW to my skin.It was like I washed it with my cleaneser.Nothing different.I have heard about using oatmeal with honey as a mask.I havent tried it but it sounds good!
I have a friend that has HORRIBLE skin. She had such bad breakouts that her skin never cleared up.Now you can't tell if its zits or scars.I recommended Noxzema and Velocity (Mary Kay) to her but she stuck with water.I told her over and over to get to a dermocologist before her skin starts scarring, but she just said "Nah it wont." I should be a facial cleanser recommeneder (sp?). I might not take good care of my skin but I sure know to use.
I have a problem with my eyelides being dark.Does anyone know how to not make them dark?
Talk later.

HAHAHHA! I've heard of that too, but never got around to getting any...

I've actually been using aspirin to exfoliate my skin. Take some of the really really cheap store-brand aspirin (I use 2 of the Walgreens kind) and dissolve into a paste with water right in your palm. Spread over face and let it set. Some people like to wait until it dries, but then the little aspirin particles start falling all over the place. Rub off, and voila! Redness GONE! (That would make sense though, cause aspirin is an anti-inflammatory drug...)

I've also found that little aspirin particles can be a little stubborn to rinse off, so no I just use this when I shower so it really gets rinsed off....

But yes! Since I've started the aspirin mask, my face has less of the big, red pimples that sometimes plague it. Plus, my pores are always clogged and this takes the gunk right out!

Oh, and I'm supposed to say what I like abou my skin. Well, it isn't perfect by any means (I'll always have oil slicks, huge pores and little blemishes all over) but I really like the tone of my skin. It just glows. Or maybe it's the oil, heh. My younger sister has really dry skin and small pores, but the color of her skin looks really dull. (For some reason she gets pimples as well even though her skin is dry...)

Also, I'll thank my oily skin when I'm old. It wrinkles less.

I was thinking about experimenting with Jan Marini C-ESTA Cream to help out my skin problem I've heard some nice promises about this product; however, I am a bit skeptical about it. Do you know anything about Jan Marini or C-ESTA? Would you recommend me to use it? Are there any other related products that you think I should consider?

Also I was trying to find a nice place to get it. So far google comes up with the following:
http://store.skin--one.com/cestacream1oz.html http://www.makemeheel.com/mmh/product.do?id=11156 http://www.acnewizard.com/product.pl?id=239

Do you have any experience with the above places? If you know of a really nice place to shop for this kind of products, I would be infinitely grateful if you could post it here.

Krikun, are you looking for acne solutions?

It's all over the place now and I know that makes some people skeptical, but I've actually heard wonderful things about Proactive. I have at least four friends who use it and who really like it, so that may be something to look into. I haven't heard of either of the products you brought up, but I've never looked much into anything other over-the-couner skin care. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I currently use proactive for my face. It works really well. I love it. I've been only using it since March and my skin is really clear.

When I was 15, I was on accutane for a year and half and it kept my skin clean for the rest of my teens until about earlier this year when I started to break out again.

So yeah, Proactive is $$ but is worth it! You'll see stars like Jessica Simpson using it and few others.

I'm currently using the Biosource exfoliating gel and Aquasource gel intense mosturization from Biotherm. The exfoliating gel is quite effective for me, because it really clear out the impurities and dead cells. If anybody have problem on dead skincells, I will recommend this product. Besides that, using peel-off masks can also lift dead skincells off the skin, as well as helping to speed up the skin renewal process.
