Body Dysmorphic Disorder is characterized by a preoccupation with some imagined defect in appearance. Basically, you focus on a supposed body flaw in a way that leads to stress and worry.

If you have this disorder or know someone who does, this is the place to share your stories and seek support.

Well how do you know if you have BDD or if you're just overly self conscious about something?

Just Curious,

Good question.

As with other psychological disorders there is a list of symptoms. A psychologist has to diagnose you based on these symptoms to know for sure.

The difference between being concerned about your appearnce and BDD is that people with BDD are obsessed with a particluar imagined body flaw (e.g., one ear is smaller than the other) and it results in significant distress and impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning (i.e., relationships with family and friends, your work).

The preoccupation is not better accounted for or explained by another mental disorder (e.g., dissatisfaction with body shape and size in Anorexia Nervosa).

Even if a person does have a slight anomaly, their reaction to it is excessive.

Someone who is concerned about a certain body part, but who does not have BDD, will not spend most of their energy thinking about the body part. BDD if not treateed will also affect someone most likely for their enitre lifespan (though usually starting in adolescence).

I hope that helped.

Summarized from the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fourth edition. .

As Bettie knows I have this condition and i have to say it's the worst feeling in the world. All you do is think about the body part all day and it's just exhausting. The thing is I don't want to look at it.But I HAVE to.And when I look at the body part I just feel awful.I am currently on Paxil and an OCD medication for this.I just feel like dying because i hate it.But I know I must go on.If anyone else has this please please talk about it.I feel alone and like I'm the only one that has it.But I know thats not true.Millions of people suffer from it.It took me two years to actually have the courage to talk to my pyschologist and doctor.A word of advice:if you have it don't keep it lockep up inside of yourself. It will get worse

Thanks entropie for posting the links to those BDD boards. I found a very helpful thread and some links from there about picking (something related to BDD and to OCD) which I do.

It is always nice to know you are not alone.
Merci!
