Alright. My boyfriend and I are thinking about having sex. *just thinking* I have about 5 condoms that expire on Feb. 7, 2003. Would they be ok to use the night they expired? I'm not sure.. But id liek some assurance, i guess. Because if I dont get it, I'll be SOOO nervous, and we'll have to buy new ones. I have about 15 that expired this month... and I opened one up last night, and they seemed fine. Is there seriously something wrong with using them a littel bit after the expiration date, as long as its not lik a yr over? [Note, i would NEVER do that.. But i was just curious if you couldue them if they expired 2 or 3 weeks ago, for example?] IP: Logged |

I wouldn't advise it. Heed the expiry dates, and buy new ones. You'll need new ones later anyway. So, again, Buy the new ones. You think? Even if they expire that night? Maaan.. I dont feel comfortable with it. I'm definatly buying new ones. Now I'm just curious if it'd be ok.. if theyd still have the same effectiveness if they wereused the day of expiration date But.. Ok, thanks for replyin to me.

The only way to find out is to use them and see if they break. Doesn't sound like a good trade on sating curiosity to me. Personally? I'd stop using condoms a month before the expiry date. Honestly, a condom that near the expiry date has been hanging around a good, long time (probably at the store). The last batch I bought two months ago? Expiry is in 2006. Another batch I've had for a half-year has an expiry of 2004. That's about the amount of good time you should have on newly bought condoms, at least a year or so. Not months, and certainly not days. ------------------ My epitaph should read: "She worked herself into this ground." [This message has been edited by Miz Scarlet (edited 01-15-2003).] IP: Logged |

I agree completely with Miz Scarlet. I'd vote for throwing them out and getting some new ones. Remember too that an expiration date doesn't mean that exactly on that date they will begin to look like swiss cheese and slowly melt into a small puddle of sticky green goo. The expiration date lets you know that by that time, some breakdown will have/can begin to occur. So that you'll know around that time (and definately afterward) to pitch them...or at least relegate them to use as water balloons at your next pool party. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Consumers Union did some tests on expired condoms as part of their 1999 condom testing. These condoms had a much higher failure rate than condoms that had not expired. As explained in the reference, condoms, either lubricated or not, will expire as the latex ages and loses its elasticity. In the case of spermicidal condoms, the expiration date is set by the expected time the spemicide will cease to function because of normal chemical breakdown. Good on you for checking for the expiry dates. These represent the best estimates of the manufacturers. It's best for you to err on the side of caution. ------------------ - Albert Einstein IP: Logged |
