ok, i tried to search this but couldn't find quite what i wanted, so i am aware that STDs can be transferred through oral sex(as well as other things) so it is best to use condoms/dental dams and what-not(and i plan to when i start). but i am curious, in a monogomous relationship where neither partner has been sexually involved (in any way) with anyone else previous to this relationship, and neither has ever displayed signs of having or carrying an STD, what is the likelyhood that an STD would be transmitted if oral was done without a condom/dental dam?? i know there is always a chance, but i would like to know if it is high/low/medium risk? any statistics or forwards to other links would be great!

Even if neither of you has ever been sexually active with anyone else, many STDs can be contracted via non-sexual routes.

So if neither of you has ever been sexually active with anyone else, your risk would be lower for some STDs than it would be otherwise - but it still exists.

We can't estimate the precise risk you'd face from unprotected oral sex, because it depends on so many other factors - what STDs you and/or your partner might have been exposed to via non-sexual routes, whether or not they were infected, how easily those particular STDs can be transmitted, etc.

You can take a look for yourself: Infection Section.

But bacterial or yeast infections, for instance, develop all on their own in your body, because they're caused by normal bacteria and imbalances. Public lice (AKA crabs) can be transmitted by shared towels or toilets, Oral Herpes (one of the mmost prevalent STIs there is) can be spread by nonsexual kissing or sharing glasses in the home and so forth, as can mono or cytomegalovirus.

That given, in ANY innstance, unless you and your partner have both each had TWO full STI screens in a six month period, been monogamous during that time AND practiced safer sex for all activities during that period, it's simply the case that you do not have a decreased risk of transmission.

So, don't want to use condoms and dams but want to decrease your risk? Then you can do all of the above without being sexually active at all during those six months.

i understand that STD/STI screening is necessary to ensure saftey and prevent disease, and will be sure to do so before advancing sexually without protection, (and i guess this question might be a little off the original topic) but which STDs can people have while being completely unaware of them? or which are the most common to be unaware of while carrying? since i'm sure many diseases can be carried and what to ensure that i am aware of the possibility that they are there.

Almost all of them. Many STDs (such as HIV) can go for long periods without showing any symptoms at all. Some STDs are commonly asymptomatic in men. Others (such as chlamydia) may not show any obvious symptoms ever, while potentially causing permanent physical damage.

And some people may experience symptoms, but not realize that they are indeed symptoms that something's wrong. Or they may misunderstand them - for example, not realizing that "cold sores" are the same as "herpes".

last question in this thread i promise!!
but say i was using a condom for oral sex and it broke... would my chances of getting an STD/STI still be lower because i did use it?? or would they be the same because it broke?? are there any other ways to prevent STDs during oral/manual sex??

If you are using a condom, female condom, or dental dam for any kind of sex and it breaks, you must consider yourself at full risk for STD/STI transmission and (if possible) pregnancy.
