I'm not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but I"ll go for it..... I would really like to go on Birth Control, but I am deathly afraid of gaining weight. I have major body issues and I wondering if any one knows of a specific birth control that won't make someone gain as much weight. I know every one has different bodies and different reactions, but if any one has any info it would be great if you could pass it along. Thanks

brith control doesn't cause weight gain, but it sure can aggravate it. you will not have ot worry about gaining weight if you maintain a healthy diet. lay off the junk food.

i used to be on ortho tri cyclen, and at that time, i was entering college. it's a potent batch of hormones, and with the dramatic change in my eating habits (going from bad ot worse) i gained a lot of weight. my gynecologist switched me over to triphasil, and i moved out of the dorms. i've been faring quite well since, and i have lost some weight since then.

but that is *my* body chemistry, so you will want to discuss this matter with your gynecologist and see what's right for you. okay? cool.

i myself have been on ortho tricyclen for a little over a year (my first year of college, as a sidenote). i have not noticed any weight gain at all, but i know some people who did have a slight problem with it.

mostly it depends on your other lifestyle habits: diet, exercise, etc. for example, when i went off to college, i was getting a *lot* more physical exercise than in high school, because i didn't take my car with me and i had to walk everywhere on a very large campus and within a fairly large city. this helped balance out any possible weight problems, as did the fact that i ate less and better (no money for expensive junk foods, no time for excessive snacking, etc., etc.).

if you are concerned, though, go in and talk to a doctor. a doctor can tell you with more authority which pills carry the highest risk of certain side effects, plus he can suggest one to start with and can change it later if need be.

plus, take time to consider: if you get on a pill that causes you to gain a couple of pounds, is that really all that bad? i mean, as long as it is very slight and not severe, a few pounds *might* be an acceptable trade-off for all the benefits you can get from the pill (clearer skin, more predictable menstrual cycles, less painful menstrual cramps, and of course, lowered risk of pregnancy!).

however, that is a trade-off that only you can weigh to decide what choice is best for you. and, after all, if you do decide to go on the pill and you are unhappy with any side effects, you can always change your mind! =D

I've been on OrthoNovum and Mircette, and am currently on Ovcon. I haven't gained or lost weight on any of them. Mircette was best for having reduced cramping. But that was just how those worked with me and my body, you need to talk with your doctor about what would be best for you. And I think that maybe you should reconsider your reasons for having sex and whether or not you should continue if you're feeling so insecure about yourself that gaining a few pounds is horrifying to you.

i also started on ortho my first year of college and i didn't gain any weight but it gave my incredible mood swings, so i decided to try a different type and my doctor suggested lo-ovral. it stopped the horrible mood swings but i did gain about 10 pds.

although i don't think it was all from the pill - the first year in college is a bit strange.

Before I got on birth control, I wondered about this too. When it came down to whether I was going to be on it or not, I decided yes because I was going to be sexually active. I decided that it was better to gain 10 lbs or so from birth control that gain weight and a child and possibly a disease. So, that is where my thoughts were. And if you were wondering, I've had no gain from the pills. At most 5 pounds, from a lifestyle change. (I eat out a lot and barely leave the house since it's now summer vacation, but I've been on the pill since January with no gain until July.)

Just a reminder - oral contraceptives provide absolutely no protection against disease, which is why you should still use condoms unless you've had the requisite STD tests. And even then, birth control pills can and do fail, so condoms are still an excellent idea.
