Got any GLBT(Q) role models that have inspired you?

I was trying to think of one earlier and it just wasn't happening. It's kind of sad.

Three cheers for Nathan Lane! I guess he hasn't exactly inspired me because I can't act(both literally and mentally), but he's really cool. There's speculation that Shakespeare was queer, since a lot of his sonnets were written to guys, not that that says much from my point of view. I'd call him a role model. I think I saw a list somewhere of all these famous people who were queer, of course now I can't remember it. Me and my too-small brain.

There were some early feminists that were queer. The author of "The Yellow Wallpaper" short story was one of them, but her name escapes me. I think Christina Rosetti was great, but I'm unsure if she was queer.

In more recent times, I'd say Angelina Jolie, Rupert Evrett & Drew Barrymore are three people who have gone to the top, and not tried to hide their sexuality in any way. The same could be said of Elton John.

[Still off-topic] Oh. I missed that entirely. Kurt Kobain and Courtney Love used to live about three blocks away from me in Seattle. The fence was covered in "I love Kurt Kobain."

Angelina Jolie- i LOVE her take-no-sh!t attitude, she's a great athlete, brave, and sooooo hot.

Sappho- notice my signature I just think she was a lovely woman, very intelligent, & a great poet at that.

Ani DiFranco- she's bi isn't she? i luv her, she's such a talented singer & I love how she's so tough and calm.

This isn't really a person that I admire, more like a few characters. (I don't know thier orientations in real life), anyway, there's an Australian drama about a bunch of 20somethings in Melbourne called the Secret Life of Us. I don't know if it's made it outside the country yet, but anyone in Australia, I urge u to catch this one (repeats on channel Ten Mon&Tues 8:30). There are 2 gay characters, Richie and Simon, (they're not a couple). Richie goes thru a rocky coming out period, telling his g/f Miranda etc etc, and Simon's out, very comfortable, with an excellent dry wit. As far as realistic portrayals go, it's the closest I've seen so far.

Well, if I can put myself at risk of looking like a great big suck-up, I would have to say that the bi-sexual 'role model' who has been most influential in my life is our very own boardmom...Miz Scarlet, AKA Heather Corinna. Maybe not universally famous, but certainly something of a celbrity around here.

I doubt that I'd be half as knowledgable about sexuality and comfortable with my own if it wasn't for this site, and her part in it. It seems odd that someone the other side of the world who I'll probably never meet has changed me and helped me so much. Almost everything that I read of hers inspires me in some way, and I think that's pretty damn rare (especially considering that I am an exteremely stubborn 16 year old who doesn't wish to be inspired/influenced/changed by anyone).

So, she's definitely one of my 'role-models'/heroines, and I'm honestly not saying that to win brownie points. I will now be running off to find some money to donate in an effort to support her wonderful work.

Wow, that sounded like sucking up. But it aint, it came from the heart.

I've always admired Melissa Etheridge quite a bit. Okay, and so I have a huge crush on her, too.

And I whole-heartedly agree with everybody else who's mentioned our very own Heather as a role model. She rocks!

I'm with Kathryn...Melissa Ethridge all the way. I've always kind of seen her as the 'mother' of all lesbians. I suppose I like her because she isn't stereotypical and she seems pretty cool. Okay...So she is hot as well. That's just a bonus though

What a buncha big sweeties I have here! Thank yoiu guys. You made me all weepy, BJade.

You know, I was trying to think of who MY GLBT role models were growing up, and you know, I couldn't thinnk of a single one off the top of my head who was a celebrity, rather than someone I knew in life (My 7th grade social studies teacher who also taught me yoga early in the mornings before school would be top on that list in the early--influences group).

I think a lot of the musicians that I idolized were very pansexual (Bowie, Jagger, Annie Lennox in the early days, Lour Reed, Billy Bragg, etc.) but it wasn't very clear and it was far more general. except for Boy George. Really, he was out, queer and just bloody fabulous. Still is, bless'im. So hey! Look how lucky you are to have so many people to look up to in that respect! Neat!

What about Rosie O'Donnell? I love how she took an interest in that Florida gay couple. They have a number of children that they've cared for their whole lives, yet they're not allowed to adopt them because their gay. This whole situation basically outted her, and I think she's just so amazing and brave.

A whole lotta folks are gonna disagree with me on this one, but I really dig Andrew Sullivan and Tammy Bruce. Both are openly gay political writers. Mr. Sullivan's work can be found in Time Magazine from time to time as well as many other publications and Ms. Bruce used to lead NOW in Los Angeles and have her own talk radio show.

Alix Olson!! (For those of you who've never heard of her: http://www.alixolson.com/) She is the awesomest.

Oh oh, and Alison Bechdel, creator of the comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For. I wanna be a cartoonist just like her when I grow up. ^_^

I also admire Frida Kahlo a LOT.
