I'm a freshman in college and am having a slight roommate problem. We get along great for the most part, but there's just one little thing... The other night I went out to dinner and a movie with my brother and his fiance, and when I got back to my room, my roommate was on my computer...I didn't think anything of it, and I called my boyfriend (he had called earlier). When I got off the phone, she was still on the computer. I had gotten home at 10:30pm, it was now 12:30am. I didn't really want to say anything, because I didn't want to ruin relations seeing as we were getting along so well and we have to live with eachother till May. But I looked at the history this afternoon on my computer, and it turns out she went to a porn site. On MY computer! The University keeps tabs on us too. I put a password on my computer today, so she can't get back on without my permission, but should I say anything to her? I really don't want to make living together difficult...

Hmm ... this is a toughie! I can see why you would be mad that she went on your computer w/o asking, but not where she went. Since there are two of you in the room, the univ can't just assume it was you or anyone else. You could've had a visitor in your room, and when you were out then went online and looked around a bit ... The password is a good idea. Next time she wants to use it, she'll have to ask, then that will be your time to ask her only to use the computer for homework or email (or whatever, just not porn) You may want to remind her that the univ knows where you go online ...

Well, the University told us when we signed up for the email/internet account that we were responsible for whatever happened on our computer, even if we didn't know about it. So, I just don't know what to do about it...

KristenNicole, I think what you told us in your last post, you can tell her. Since you are responsible for what goes on with your computer, you would like her not to use it. You can't play the ostrich here because you have put a password on the computer and doing so will likely become some sort of issue between the two of you whether you talk about it or not. I think it better to bring it up rather than avoid it.As for the university policy, check what it is (get it in writing). Perhaps looking at adult material is not against it. Best to have all the facts before you address the issue. At my university it was aginst policy to view adult material in the computer lab, but it did not say anything about from the privacy of your room.

I'd definately say something to her. Don't be too harsh, but let her know that it is YOUR property and that she didn't have your expressed permission to use it, and on top of that browsed porn sites. It just doesn't sound accceptable to me.------------------ where is fancy bred? In the heart, or in the head?

You can also password certain types of access when it comes to your personal computer.I agree with you, it sounds like you gave her some leeway, but she used it in a way that was thoughtless when it came to consequences you could suffer.
As Bettie suggested, I'd get the info from the school, then show it to your roommate, and tell her how you feel about this.
if you're going to share the computer, set up a password system for each of you, so that in the case something like this ever DOES get you in trouble, you'll have her access logged spearately from yours.

I agree with Miz S, but if i remember correctly, aren't those sights for 18 and over? And are you and your roomate over 18?
