http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=519&ncid=751&e=10&u=/ap/20020913/ap_on_re_us/sexperts I have some thoughts on this. My alma mater has a column called Sex on Tuesday http://www.dailycal.org (read it on Tuesday, duh!). The columnist changes every term. This semester, I'd have to say I really like the columnist, Teresa Chin. She speaks frankly on the topic of sex, but does so in a way that is informative and not lewd. Her first column was about food and safer sex -- no whipped cream with condoms! Great start, and her columns have been consistantly great!
The girl (and it's almost always a girl who writes this column for some reason) who wrote last semester's column, Rachel Klein, didn't write nearly as well. Her column did not stress the importance of safer sex methods and read more or less like Letters to Penthouse. Her claim to fame, however, was she posed nude in Playboy for their Girls of the Pac10 issue back in 1999. And apparently posing nude for a soft-core porn mag qualifies you to write a sex ed column. *shrug*
now, as for the article I posted. i can see people getting their knickers in a knot over the columnists like Rachel. She had 500 words in which to give you raunch, and she sure gave it to you. But Teresa, her stuff reads like powdered sugar on a Scarleteen article. While the topic of sex is still taboo, she handles it with maturity. and besides, who is your target audience anyway? College students who are, by and large still clueless about sex, but getting into potentially dangerous situations anyway. The more they know about safety, the better.
uhh, it's late. i need sleep.
