I'm just wondering how many of you guys print out fliers to promote scarleteen. Once I get paid *bitter laugh* I plan on making some copies and putting them up (the fliers), but I'm kind of out of ideas of where to put them. Of course at the GBLT center, and at all the cafes by the university...but where else? School's out so I can't put them up there (although once it starts again I do plan on grabbing some masking tape and putting them on the inside of all the stalls). I'm also thinking of going on a secret spy mission dressed up as a middle schooler, complete with backpack, and heading over to the year-around middle schools and doing the same thing (putting fliers up in the stalls). Muwahaha, I'm evil!
But...where else? Could I ask teenage-y stores in the mall to keep a few fliers by the register? Could I ask doctor's offices to put them up? Does anyone have experience with putting fliers up, and were people friendly about it?

My best advice is to make it very clear this isn't a pornography site. Seriously, when I told a couple of people about this site and gave them information about it, some people have continued to believe it's porn even though I keep telling them it's a sex education site. Just make sure the fliers make it obvious it's sex ed, not porn, and I think most people would be really friendly and let you put them up.One more thing, don't neglect the men's bathrooms, put ask people to put some fliers in there too. Good luck on your mission, young Pixie/Grasshopper, fare well.

Ahh yes, but it's fun when people say "where do you volunteer at?" and I say "scarleteen" and they ask "ooh? What kind of place is that?" and I say "ooh, you know, one for teenagers about sex". Man, I need a camera. *ahem* anyway
I already have two males in mind to do the male's part (since ST does have much more female activitiy, we need to balance it out, after all), and if worse comes to worse I'll offer a kid five bucks to do it.

For awhile, everytime I went to the bookstore, I would bring a small stack of fliers with me. I'd sit there at the cafe table and flip through the 10 Seventeen magazines with great interest. All the while, I'm sticking folded Scarleteen fliers in between the pages. I'd do this for Teen, YM, Cosmogirl, and whatever mag is aimed toward teens. I don't think it does all that much for traffic but maybe someone will drop by.I also thought about going to the mall and sticking fliers to the back of the stall doors or leaving them in fitting rooms (but you can't cover much area if there's a fitting room clerk).
Maybe you could try leaving a stack at your local Planned Parenthood clinic, family planning/women's clinic, or the health department.
I often find fliers under my windshild wipers, promoting club parties, new restaurants, etc. So that might be an idea. I don't know if there's anything that says you can't do that though, so be careful.

now that i think of it, i could leave some fliers at good vibes. the crowd there's a bit older than our target audience, but it works. i also have friends who are resident assistants, so i coul get them to spread the word to their residents in the dorms.but i think my big push will be at AIDS Walk see some of you there!

Last semester, I got one of the clubs to put fliers on their table when they were handing out free condoms during sex awareness week (or whatever it was called, I forget). Actually, I've discovered the fastest way to clear an area of college students. Have someone stand in another area and yell "FREE CONDOMS!"...its amazing how fast they'll flock to that area. So, in the event of a fire, rather than yelling "FIRE" and waiting for them to take their time to leave (as college students sometimes do), just have someone stand outside and yell "FREE CONDOMS!" Anyway, I've also been known to just randomly leave stacks of small flyers laying around. No one notices you put them down but they'll pick them up to use as bookmarks.

I like the bathroom stall idea. ;-) And, hey, if you're in a store and you see a stack of "The Onion" (a humorous newspaper, popular, it seems among the "younger" crowd), ask if you can drop some Scarleteen fliers next to it. I always see people gravitate to The Onion, and a flashy Scarleteen flier sitting nearby might catch someones eye. Here in Chicago, the "alternative district" (for lack of a better name...ack, that neighborhood needs a real name) has all these...dammit, I hate labels, but "gothy" and "punk" stores, where there are loads and loads of free fliers and newspapers just sitting around. Now I feel inspired to drop off a stack of Scarleteen fliers...ooh...

There are a million and six places in Columbia, MO [AKA College Town, USA ] where people can post what things -- a little place called the Peace Nook, another, larger place called Cool Stuff... the 'hippie' shops. I've decided I'm going to start sticking Scarleteen fliers on a few bulletain boards next time I'm there. Whee-hah.[This message has been edited by Aria51 (edited 06-18-2001).]

I got permission to hand them out at the GBLT youth group I go to, which is good good. And I thought of another thing...what's the easiest way to make sure that a bunch of teenagers get something? duh, the lockers. So when school starts I'm sticking them in the PE lockers (they're less messy and have less papers than the other ones, plus you can tell which ones are used because there's lock on them). But I'm loving the ideas you all have ------------------ Brittany Scarleteen Advocate

sorry to say... but I'm kinda lost of this one.I mean, do you do by yourself the fliers or do you take them somewhere on the website ? I'd love to promote this site. So many people would like to know about such a great informational site like Scarleteen.
Thanks ! David

David, I'm kind of lost too. Are you asking if we make the Scarletten fliers ourselves? If so, no we don't (not unless someone is feeling extra creative). We download it from the site and print it out. You can find it here:scarleteen - the scarleteen printable flier

Just curious, but could I get in trouble for, say, "accidentally" leaving a stack of flyers on the table at a cafe or library, taping a flyer to the wall of a bathroom stall in the mall or at McDonalds, or tacking one up on a light-post in the park? I'm more worried about the last 2 than the first one, but the bathroom stall thing sounded like an extremely good idea. I wanna put the flyer up somewhere that doesn't require asking permission, since most of the people in my city autimatically point to the door when you say "teenager" and "sex" in the same sentence. And I know from experience that no matter how much I explain the concept and nature of the site, and what it does, people would probably still be reluctant to let me put one up. The idea of putting one up in my school is a bad idea also- if the school actually let me put up a flyer (which I doubt they would, cause most the teachers are VERY uptight and close-minded) some of my peers would be disrespectful, and I don't wanna subject you guys to that. Any ideas that don't require asking for permission?

uhh...this is kinda a stupid question, but could you possibly post the flier somewhere else on the site? I dont have a program that can properly dl it, and it cuts off the top and bottom, and it ends up so small ya can't even read the writing.Or better yet, if anyone knows how to fix this, drop me a line.

Ultimately Lucky, at any private budiness or placve, you need to ask permission. And if you don't, what could happen is that then Scarleteen would get contacted about littering or harasssment. Not good.
But in places which allow public posting of flyers, or have bulletin boards that are free-for-alls, you don't need to ask.

I gave a flier to my health teacher, and I wanted to ask the school nurse if she could post a flier up on the sex board, but I always forgot. There's always this year though.Oh yeah, and I'm with everyone else. The bathroom stall is a really good idea. I just don't know if that would work in my school. We're super abstinence and don't mention sex unless it's with later in the same sentence. We're not allowed to do a lot of things at our school, even though it's public.
Ooh, guidance office is a good idea too. Doctor's waiting room?
Do we have Scarleteen bumper stickers yet? I'm going to look in the store. That would be a really good promotion. Especially of those who drive in high traffic zones.

Keoki, great idea! I would love a Scarleteen bumper sticker. Probably so much that I'd be apprehended for defacing public property. How about bookcovers? I don't know about financial feasibility but I think that would be awesome. Miz S would make great-looking ones but hey, we could just tape 2 posters to our bookcovers. I'm a major geekster, I not only use bookcovers but I want ST ones.

Ooh! Book covers! That's an awesome idea! I usually just use brown paper bags to doodle on, but I should add Scarleteen on them because people read it all the time. Ooh ooh! That is such a good idea.Oh yeah, and I promote Scarleteen on my web site. I forgot to mention that. They aren't the cool fliers, but I happen to like them.

I think I'm going to email my school's guidance counciler and ask him if he could post some flyers in school once it starts. I figure if he did it, he could more easily get approval, I wouldn't get in trouble for putting up flyers, and Scarleteen wouldn't get in trouble for having flyers around. So, what all should I say him. I just need some suggestions. I have the general idea that it helps promote safe sex and answers a lot of questions about sexuality. I'm also going to tell him that it helped me, and that teens think about sex a lot. Oh yeah, and that it's NOT porn. I don't want to make it too long; I just want to get to the point. Well, I did it. I just send my guidance councilor requesting the ability to post Scarleteen fliers throughout the school. Here it is, if you'd like to read it:Hi, it’s me again. I kind of have a favor to ask, and I think you’re just the person to come to. See, there’s this web site that I would like to put fliers up throughout the school for. It’s called Scarleteen (http://www.scarleteen.com). It’s a sexual education web site that I have found very useful. When I have questions about sex and I’m too nervous to go to my parents or teachers, I can just go here. I’d really like to stress that Scarleteen is NOT a porn site. Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, along with Yahoo and many other associations around the country, have recognized it. It’s an INFORMATIONAL site. I can’t stress that enough because many people associate sex with pornography. Not only does Scarleteen provide information about sex to teens, it talks about body image, healthy behaviors, and diversity. Like I said, Scarleteen is very diverse. EVERYONE is welcome. Males, females, transgender… Gays, lesbians, bisexuals… People of all ages are welcome to read the site, but only teens of the age 13 are aloud to post without adult permission. Even adults come to the site. Parents and children… Everyone! Scarleteen has articles, charts, emergency numbers, addresses for clinics, and a message board. The message board is my favorite part of Scarleteen because you can get immediate answers if you need them, and just general questions can be answered. The boards are kept clean; there is no profanity or inappropriateness. Techniques for sexual acts, discrimination of race/gender/sexual orientation/body image/etc., topics above PG-13 levels, and many other things are strictly prohibited. I decided to ask you if I, or the school staff, could post fliers and give out the site address because I don’t want to get the school, Scarleteen, or myself in trouble. I wouldn’t want anyone to get mad at Scarleteen for promoting something “inappropriate,” nor would I want to get myself in trouble for posting fliers that shouldn’t be on the walls in the school. Since you are a guidance councilor, I assumed that you could ask the staff and approve it. I would be glad to post the fliers for you; I’m not ashamed, but I just don’t want to get anyone in trouble. I strongly suggest you look through Scarleteen. It has truly been a great help to me and I feel that others should be able to benefit from it too. As a teenager, the topic of sex and self-image comes up a lot. Scarleteen is a safe place to read about such topics. I should also mention that Scarleteen promotes abstinence as its number one choice on sex. But since some teenagers have already had sex, or are thinking about it, Scarleteen promotes safe sex as it’s next choice. I mean, if you’re going to do it, why not do it safely? The link for the fliers is http://www.scarleteen.com/flyer/index.html. I hope you consider, or at least understand, what I’m trying to say. I think the fliers would do nicely in the health room, the nurses office, the inside of bathroom stalls, in the locker rooms, on some of the halls, in the guidance office, etc. Thank you for your time, and I really, really hope you consider.
Well, I think I did a pretty good job. I'll be sure to let you know what he says!

Hey,I think I'll give some to the school counsellor. Putting them up in the toilets sounds like a good idea too (not that they'd last long).
I'm going on work experience at Tilly's (a feminist cafe) in September, so maybe I should take some in the (if it doesn't bother the owner).
She's nice, but I feel she only accepted me when she found out that the students had to organise the WE on their own this year.
Anyway, I'm going to print out some fliers now!

Since it's way hard to print out a complete book cover, maybe MzS can do a square thingie you can cut out and paste or tape on top of regualr book covers. How big is your average text book? I'm thinking a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper turned sideways (landscape), that you can split down the middle with two "book covers" on it, would be cool.
Geeze, I just realised I have not opened a text book in over five years!
