I really want to get my labret pierced for my birthday, in december, and have wanted it done for about a year, but there a re a few things that are making me kinda hesitant. Firstly, when i got my bellybutton done, it went all gooey and septicy for a bit and looked truly disgusting ( its nice now tho ) but obviously i really don't want green goo oozing from a piercing on my face!!! so can they go nasty even if u clean them? Additionally, I'm gonna have to stick a plaster over it for school - but would that lead to ickiness? also, how long does it take to heal, and whats the pain factor ? i also want a tattoo - a little smiley acid faced flower with pink petals, either on my bum or hip, and wanna know how much pain wer'e talkin. Please help me out here, peeps!!!------------------ ~*smiles are kisses for the soul*~ ;)

the main problem that i've heard of with piercings in or around the mouth, is that its quite easy for skin to grow over the post of the jewelry inside the mouth. once that happens, you'd have to either cut the skin to remove the jewelry or try to just pop it out. the size and length of the jewelry is important, but as long as you have an experienced piercer, he/she should know what kind of jewelry is best to use so that skin doesnt end up growing over the post.happy piercing!

Yep, hon, you are definitely going to have some crustiness there for awhile. That's just something that our body does when we push steel through it - it's called lymph or pus or just 'crusties,' and it's dead white blood cells. Depending on the amount of trauma your body feels with the piercing, you can have it around for months, but the labret I've noticed only tends to crust for a couple of weeks.I'd say if you really want it, just go for it, but two additional considerations:
It's not going to make your piercing heal well, and it's going to make the crusties last longer, if you put a plaster over the pierce site and the jewelry. One of the most important things for a new piercing is that it gets air, to allow it to heal. Also, if you decide that it's too much trouble to put a plaster over it every day, and you end up having to take it out, if it's already healed you will have a tiny scar.
My advice: Wait till you're out of this school. I know, it's dumb, but it'll save you problems in the meantime.
On the pain factor - you know, it's GOING to hurt. It is a piercing, after all. But it's going to be over really quick, and that will be it. (Until the next few days...smirk.)
About that tattoo: I have no idea.

My girly got a tattoo, and she tends to be fairly wussy about pain. (I'll probably get some trouble for that one...) Maybe bring a friend along so you have a hand to squeeze. As far as the piercing goes, I'd suggest you go for a really good place. If I was going to get any form of piercing or tattoo, I'd go somewhere which was cleaner than most hospitals!

I'm going to agree with Lemming here.. wait until you're out of school.. it'll be a lot less hassle than getting it done now.Healing time, about 3 months, depending on how well you heal. My labret piercing is reasonably new, almost a month old, and it's still oozing slightly.
Tattoo wise, I'd wait. I've seen so many people (too many) go and get tattoos on the spur of the moment and regret it later on.
There are reasons why there are age limits on piercings and tattoos.

P.S. Chances are they won't use a local anasthetic, or numb the area, because it constricts the skin and makes it harder to pierce.

I'm in agreement with lemming and entropie here. You don't want to do something like this to your body which you know from the onset you're going to make difficult to heal, and putting any sort of cover on a piercing while it's healing is a Bad Idea, as any proffessional piercer will tell you. It isn't just about compromising how it looks, it's about your health. You don't want to give yourself an infection for vanity's sake. That's just silly. As for tattoos, being an aficionado myself, what has always worked for me is to require that I spend at least six months to a year designing my piece (I've done all my own artwork, so if you aren't doing that, whoever is doing it for you should take that much time -- and I personally thinking using flash already done at a shop is tacky). Taking that much time with it gives me plenty of time to decide if what I'm doing is really something I can look at with beauty day in and day out for the rest of my life, and it seems to work well -- I have yet to have even the most conservative people be able to NOT compliment me on my ink.
As far as the pain, I'm the worst person to ask. Things tend to barely tickle me that hurt other people, so I've never experienced any pain the four times I've had work done. But what I can tell you is that I feel stronger sensations -- and many people feel pain -- the closer a tat is done to bone.
But think about it. At 75, will you still find a "smiley acid faced flower" speaks to you or is beautiful? Doubtful.

My labret is actually one of the few piercings I DON'T have! lolMy piercer, Kelly, is totally amazing and would be happy to answer an e-mail regarding "ickyness" and pain. A link for her addy can be found here: http://www.pipcom.com/~stabbed
As for tattoos I have a small blue star on my ankle. It didn't hurt too much and healed up really quickly, I'm not sure how a larger tattoo on your bum or hip would react tho, maybe phone some places and ask the tattoo guy? lol
ttyl! Best of luck!
