Hi there, Scarleteen, I've recently been to my gyno for the pill and to sort out a few small issues with bleeding during the pill, and I'm feeling very uncomfortable. First, she told me she was going to take a swab and asked me to lie back on the table; I thought the swab was just going to be on the area around my labia as I was complaining of odd coloured discharge there, but then I started to feel pain when, with no warning at all, something WAY larger than a swab was inserted and then the swab which really hurt my insides. I was told the swab was to test for clymidia. My gyno then informed me she was going to leave the room to get another doctor for a second opinion, and when they both looked down there she said something like "Yes, it looks like her cervix is eroded". I was completely freaked out at that point but kept quiet to be polite and let the examination continue. When the gyno pulled whatever was inserted in me free, I looked down to see it was this rather large steel clamp thing and I actually couldn't believe it was inside me. At first I found it kind of funny, I think maybe I was trying to laugh it off but now I'm very upset and I feel a little violated. I wasn't expecting any of that to happen and when she tried to explain what "cervical errosion" was I didn't really understand. Afterwards I kept holding my stomach because it felt like my insides were going to fall out and I could still feel pain from the swab. As well as that, I'm frightened about what "erosion" means because I don't really know what it is. My gyno said it could be because of clymidia or it could be a combination of the pill and the fact that I'm in my "child-bearing years" but I won't know until they get the swab sent to be analyzed. I feel like I should change my gyno, I'm still feeling a little pain and tightness and it's already a day after, and I feel really, really uncomfortable in myself, like I'd been assaulted, even though I know that absolutely wasn't the case. And what is this "erosion" she was talking about? Should I be worried? - Conny

Conny: a "swab" exam usually involves a speculum exam. In other words, they need to swab the cervix, and a speculum is needed to do that. A speculum is that silver instrument. Some people know those things, and healthcare providers certainly do, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a new patient will NOT. And I certainly think that before inserting a speculum, a healthcare provider should let a patient know that is what they are going to do. As well, I'd say using a term like "erosion" in earshot of you without explaining that it's not a catastrophic term -- for sure, I see why it sounded that way -- or using more patient-friendly language stinks. By all means, I think if you want to choose a more patient-friendly GYN, that'd certainly be understandable. "Erosion" of the cervix is explained very nicely and simply here: http://womenshealth.about.com/od/cervicalerosion/f/cervicalerossio.htm It certainly is not anything you automatically need to worry about. It can occur sue to an infection like Chlamydia, for sure, but can also happen after sexual intercourse or tampon use, too.

Heather, Thanks for the link, I feel so relieved now, I was having visions of blood and gore pouring out of me! I think I may change my GYN as I'm feeling a little nervy, so thanks so much for understanding. Whew, I feel better now

Of course. And I'm so sorry you had that experience: healthcare experiences where we feel like that really stink, and absolutely can feel traumatic.
