If youve seen my bio then you know I'm a bit of a worry head but again, I would just like some reassurance so I dont have to worry or think about this all the time. Can you be pregnant and have withdrawal bleeds still? I know the most likely answer will be "no but there is a chance" (but that answers just gonna make me worry all the time ) XD I've always had my withdrawal bleeds, and I thought the way the pill worked is that it broke down your womb walls while you had a bleed, so how could a baby continue growing if the walls are breaking down? I use condoms every time, and have only missed a pill once. I would just like to be reassured again, (silly i know XD) that with condoms and the pill, I couldnt really be pregnant and have a withdrawal bleed?

It is very unlikely that one would be pregnant and still have a withdrawal bleed. If one was pregnant, they would most typically miss a withdrawal bleed (just like how women not on birth control would miss a period if they were pregnant) altogether. If you are on the combined pill and use condoms as well, your risk of pregnancy is very, very low (see "The Buddy System: Backing up Your Birth Control With Another Method" article for effectiveness ratings of combining two methods together - the combined pill and condoms are definitely quite effective when used together). Try not to worry! I'm just like you when it comes to worrying, though; so though you're not alone on this front, try not to worry about this. Take care!

Hi Frenchiex. The main way the pill works is to prevent ovulation, which means that there's no egg to fertilise in the first place to start the whole process of becoming pregnant. If you'd like some information on how the pill works, there's a link here - the question isn't quite what you're asking, but the answer contains a lot of relevant information. http://www.scarleteen.com/article/reproduction/how_do_birth_control_pills_really_work_even_during_the_placebo_period In case a bit more information on the process of reproduction is helpful to you, here's a link for that: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/reproduction/where_did_i_come_from_a_refresher_course_in_human_reproduction Using the pill correctly by itself, or condoms correctly by themselves, are both reliable methods of contraception. Both used correctly together, they're extremely effective, and your chance of pregnancy is really, really low, just like Copper says. Also, that one pill you missed is only relevant for the rest of that pill pack - once you've started a new pack, you don't need to be concerned about it, as it won't affect your level of protection. You're correct that your withdrawal bleed is your uterine lining breaking away and bleeding out. It's not possible to sustain a pregnancy without that uterine lining. It is possible for a person to have small amounts of random bleeding or spotting while they're pregnant, but it's much more common not to bleed. It would be very, very unlikely for bleeding that was at the right time and the right amount of blood for a withdrawal bleed to happen while someone was pregnant. Bleeding that seems like your withdrawal bleed is overwhelmingly likely to Be your withdrawal bleed, and one of the clearest and surest signs possible that you're not pregnant.
