What was supposed to be super smart and super safe actually ended up a bit of a mess. Tonight, the boy and I had sex for the first time. I started up on Nuvaring again just yesterday evening at 9pm, knowing i'd be needing to go back on HBC (to get the ball rolling, so to speak). It was all good, until our condom broke. This has never happened to me before, and we were using plenty of Astroglide! It was an ultra thin; I'm unfamiliar with the type. There was no ejaculation (until a second, fully intact condom was put on), and I want to know if you guys would recommend EC in this circumstance. At a glance: 2nd day on Nuvaring from not being on it for months/ very end of my menstrual cycle/ broken condom/ no ejaculation. It just sucks, because everything was supposed to run so, so smoothly! I'm actually pretty embarassed to be posting this.

If he did not ejaculate, most sources I can pull up state that emergency contraception is not necessary. Unless the break was very substantial, pre-ejaculate really is a small amount for most guys; there's probably more lube on the inside of a condom than most guys pre-cum. So, the likelihood of any of it seeping out with a minor breakage and immediate pull-out is pretty low. So, I'd say as long as you withdrew immediately and used a fresh condom, EC is unnecessary. You can call your doctor or local pharmacist for a second opinion, though. :)

Thanks, Lauren! P.S. Said condom was pretty much obliterated, and actually ended up inside me. I was shocked. Does that make a difference? I really SHOULD have waited until I was seven days into the Nuvaring. -_- [ 02-03-2008, 02:50 AM: Message edited by: StarHallie ]

Did you start the ring on the first day of your period? The full prescribing information of the Ring states that a back-up method is not recommended unless the ring was started on Days 2-5. The info states one MUST use a backup method if they start thereafter. We usually advise going the full 7 days regardless of packet information, even the first full cycle, with a backup method. But given your situation, I'd say if the ring was started during those first 5 days of bleeding, your risk is minimal. But I'd ask the doc who prescribed you the ring to be sure. (And don't beat yourself up! You DID the responsible thing by using a backup method, it just blew up in your face. It happens. :))

I started my period Saturday the 26th, and put the ring in the night of Friday the 1st. I suppose that, counting from the day I started, it was the seventh day of my menstrual cycle. I essentially waited until I'd completely stopped bleeding to put it in. So, yesterday, Saturday the 2nd, was my second day with the Nuvaring in. I was trying to make my cycle as least wacky as possible, and I was kind of counting on the condoms. -_- (Thanks )
