Astroglide is this thing called lubrication (aka "lube"). It is used during masturbation, inserting tampons, sex, or anything else you want to use it for.
If there is a penis and a vagina involved during sex, the male (wearing a condom, of course) should put lube in the condom (it will be easier to put on) and on the outside. And the girl will put it around her vagina and genitals.
Lube makes things very slippery, which makes things a hell of a lot less painful (for some people sex is painless).
If that was super confusing, just say so

One more thing: Vaseline, butter, or anything else to that nature should *NEVER BE USED* during sex. The condom will slip off very quickly, and the risk of pregnancy will be high.

Actually, anything greasy can destroy latex. If you want to see how it works, blow up a couple of condoms, tie off the ends (like great phallic balloons), smear one in whatever grease you have around (butter, kitchen oil, vaseline, hand lotion, whatever), leave the other one alone, and see which one's still inflated the next day.------------------ Why scream and cry when you know it's true? Why fall in love when there's better things to do?

quote: wont the lube make it slippery and higher the risk of the condom comming off?If you pour a gallon of lube into a condom, then yup, I can imagine it might go sliding all over the place . But putting a few drops inside the tip is fine, and many guys find it improves the sensation for them. And you can put as much as you like on the outside. Check out the guide to using condoms properly at http://www.scarleteen.com/infection/condom.html.
Generally, lube is a very good thing. Many sex educators advise that you always use water-based lube with any sort of latex (condoms, gloves, dams, etc.), because it reduces the chances of the latex breaking and prevents tiny abrasions which make it much easier for STDs to be transmitted. And it's not just for preventing discomfort, it actually makes things more fun - wetter is better!

And just as a side note, not only does any sort of oil or fat like butter or vaseline eat through latex (check out the Infamous Gumdrop Girl Experiment at http://www.scarleteen.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/000147.html ), but it's also hard to wash out - so it tends to stick around, clog things up, and provide a breeding-ground for infections. This is another reason why it's important to go for a good *water-based* lubricant like Astroglide or Liquid Silk.[This message has been edited by logic_grrl (edited 06-05-2002).]

For advice on safer sex, check out http://www.scarleteen.com/sexuality/safer.html .If your boyfriend is using a condom properly, pulling out before he ejaculates isn't going to make a difference - in fact it may make the condom more likely to fail.

A condom shouldn't make anal sex any more uncomfortable. Just make sure to use a lot of lubricant. And go slow. And don't forget to have your boyfriend put on a brand new condom if he's going to switch between anal and vaginal sex. You don't even wanna know what kind of nasty infections you can get from using the same condom. Ick.These scarleteeners seem to like Durex, Kimono, and Lifestyles the best. I like Lifestyles. Ultra Sensitive Ribbed is my favorite. It's lubricated too.

You must, must, must use a condom for anal intercourse - and lots of water-based lube. The rectal tissues are very delicate and susceptible to tiny tears, so unprotected anal intercourse has a very high risk for transmitting any STDs.If you are doing anal sex *right*, it shouldn't hurt at all, but if you get it wrong, then yes, it can hurt a lot (and, in the worst case scenario, injure those delicate tissues).
I would say that you shouldn't be considering anal intercourse unless you and your partner know and trust each other very well and can communicate easily. It's not a good idea to try anal intercourse just as a way of reducing the pregnancy risk (unprotected anal intercourse can still cause pregnancy if sperm leaks out of the anus and gets into the vagina - check out http://www.scarleteen.com/reproduction/preg_risk_anal.html ).
If you do decide you want to try anal sex, don't go galloping straight to anal intercourse. Try a finger first (with a latex glove and lots of lube). And remember that he's got an anus too, so the experimentation can be equal-opportunity!
Follow the cardinal rules for anal sex: go ultra-slow, be safe, use double the amount of lube you think you need, relax, don't force anything, communicate communicate communicate, and stop immediately if anything hurts. As Miss Thang says, don't transfer anything from the anus to the vagina. And don't do anything you don't feel like doing.
Check out http://www.scarleteen.com/sexuality/advice_anal.html for some wise advice.

Using spermicide (on condoms or anything else) is *not* a good idea. It's pretty harsh and can irritate the tissues of the vagina (or anus), making transmission of STDs more likely.Yes, some condoms (with or without spermicide) are pre-lubricated, but it's only a very small amount of lube, generally not enough (and certainly not enough for anal sex!). It's much better to have a bottle of water-based lubricant so you can add as much as you need. Especially for any sort of anal sex, you want to have lots and lots of lube to dollop around.

KY jelly is a spiffy lubricant, too

It's cool if you prefer KY jelly, but I know some people don't like it and say they find it dries up and gets sticky quickly - that's why some people prefer other water-based lubes such as Astroglide or Liquid Silk. As with everything else, you just have to find what works best for you .Check out the Safer Sex FAQ at http://www.scarleteen.com/forum/Forum21/HTML/000115.html for lots of links to various topics on lube and which brands different people prefer.

Try your local drugstore or pharmacy, or a large chain store such as Wal-Mart. Check out the topic at http://www.scarleteen.com/forum/Forum21/HTML/000104.html for info on where different people get their safer sex supplies (including lube). If you have a look at the Safer Sex FAQ, that has plenty of topics on where to get condoms, lube, etc..And there's even a handy on-line Scarleteen shop - http://www.scarleteen.com/shop/ .
