Hi, so I'm on the pill, and have been since April. The last time I missed one was over a month ago. My boyfriend and I had sex on Sunday, without a condom, and since then, I've been having this discharge that has gone between dark brown and light red and then goes back to dark brown. It's not heavy enough that it gets all over my underwear but it's enough where I have uterine line shedding if I use a tampon. I'm not supposed to get my period until Monday and since I've been on the pill, my period has been pretty regular. I didn't have any signs of PMS leading up to this and I haven't had any abdominal pain either. Right around now I would've started having PMS, but I haven't. I've also been under a lot of stress lately because of my depression, college applications, and a huge research paper. Can anyone explain to me as to why I'm getting this brown/red discharge?

Are you up-to-date with your general sexual healthcare, including pap smears and STI testing? Is your partner current with his testing?

Yes, we are both current with our testings and we're both clean. He's the only person I've ever been with sexually and I asked him to get tested before I had sex with him and he came back clear of anything. And I mean, as far as I know, in the past year that we've been dating, he hasn't been with anyone else.

Okay. Just always want to check that first because unusual discharge or unexplained bleeding or spotting can be one sign of infection. Given that, and the fact that you're not having any other issues or changes, I'd presume it's either spotting due to your pill -- it is a common side effect -- or perhaps some bleeding from an abrasion of some kind, which can happen with any kind of genital sex. less likely when people are adequately aroused and lubricated, but even then, it can still happen.

Okay, thank you for calming my nerves. I was afraid I might be pregnant for some reason. Just wanted to make sure that it's nothing I should worry about...

The vast majority of the time, the very first symptom of pregnancy someone has is a missed period. If you aren't even to that, doesn't make sense to worry about it. And if you take your pills properly, it's highly unlikely in the first place. If you're worried about it though, and want greater reduction of the risk, it's always a good move to back up any other method with condoms.
