For the past 2 months I have had an irregular period which I would get for one day and it would just be spotting. The last time I had my period regularly was on May 30th. Although, I'm usually irregular because I don't get my period every month, but when I do get it its a regular flow. I haven't been sexually active for the past six months, but I dicided to do two pregnancy tests and they came back negative. Today I experienced some dizziness and I just haven't been feeling like myself lately. Maybe it's because I have a lot to do with going to college and having to balance my time wisely with work and school, also not being able to eat well because I got braces recently. I'm 20 years old and I am experiencing stress about school, work, and the fact I've been having problems with my period as well, but not to the extent of this been the causation for me not getting my period. I am considering to take birth control pills, but I don't know yet. What's wrong with me? What would be the best thing to do?

Before these past two months, what were your periods like? Also, how many years have you had your period for?

For the past two months my period has been just spotting for 1 day. I've had my period for exactly 6 years now. I got when I was 14 around this time and I'm 20 yrs old now

I understand, but what about before the past two months? Over the last six years, how have your periods been?

My period has always been irregular for the past 6 years. I would always get it 3-5 times a year, but it would be a regular flow. Before the past 2 months my period would be a regular flow not spotting like its happening now.

Okay. So, I'd say this many years in, if it's still this irregular, it's time to check in with an OB/GYN or GP about it, especially if you're now also having dizziness, and it sounds like you are having trouble eating enough. The first few years of a period, some irregularity is expected. But that continuing 6 years in like this, with periods still infrequent? Not so much.

Ok so I will go see my doctor. Should I take birth control pills or not?

That strikes me as an entirely different question. In other words, whether or not you should take birth control pills probably has nothing to do with any of this. But getting a prescription for the pill means having a healthcare provider take a health history and evaluate your health first before prescribing, so if this is something to take into account, they'll certainly do that.
