a little over two weeks ago (this happened on 9/1) my boyfriend and i made the irresponsible decision to have unprotected sex. i am not on any form of birth control, so even though he pulled out, we realized what a poor decision we made and went out and got plan b (or rather, its generic which i believe is called next step.) this was 12 hours later, if that info helps, and i experienced no side effects after taking it. 5 days later, i got what i believe to have been my period, though one week early (9/6). the bleeding was extremely heavy for 2 days, then lighter for the remaining 3. after that (9/11), i experienced moderate spotting and discharge which ranged from being a rusty reddish brown to very dark brown. that went on until today (8 days) where it appears i've gotten my period again. i didn't think it was possible to have 2 periods so close together and i've never had discharge like i did in between. i can't find much relevant information about the side effects of plan b other than "it may effect your period" but that's so vague i can't tell if what i'm experiencing is something to be concerned about. is it? additional info: he and i are each other's first and only partners, and we came into this STD/STI free

Plan B can cause spotting as well as irregular periods. So, this doesn't sound like anything unusual or worrisome. What you'll want to do to rule out pregnancy for sure is take a pregnancy test at 14 days after the risk. Do you want to talk at all about how you can protect yourself better next time?

I hadn't considered that there's still a possibility of pregnancy since I'm getting periods. There is?

If you had bleeding when your period was due, and it looked and felt like your regular periods to you, then you can assume that's what it was. And you are right - it is not possible to have a period and be pregnant. However, I heard you reporting irregular bleeding/spotting, rather than a normal period, which is why I suggested a test just to be safe.

Okay, I'll do that. I've never taken a pregnancy test and there seems to be a million different choices at the drug store. Is there anything you would suggest?

As long as the test isn't expired (and the expiration date will be somewhere on the packaging) then any brand is fine, really. They all work the same way.
