I'm getting off of an SSRI (Citalopram) with the help of my psychiatrist. I was wondering if any of you had any advice for sexual dysfunction brought on by SSRIs? What are your thoughts on Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction?

Hi collegegirl412, Since "sexual dysfunction" can mean a v variety of things to a variety of people, can you talk a little more about what you mean? Have you talked to your psychiatrist about how long you can expect the SSRI to remain in your system?

By sexual dysfunction, I mean arousal problems. I have trouble becoming aroused and when I do, it doesn't last very long. I am thoroughly attracted to my boyfriend, so I'm not sure why this is happening. He's understanding about this, too. I will ask my psychiatrist that question, though according to PharmGKB.org, Citalopram's half-life is 35 hours. Honestly, I'm a bit scared that I'll never be able to be sexual because of this drug. I'm afraid that I will suffer from Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction. Just so you know, I started this medication because of OCD, not depression. My understanding is that the lack of arousal many people experience with SSRIs is not permanent. I do think that addressing the role the drug may or may not have had in your low libido is a really good thing for you to do with your psychiatrist. Have you had higher levels of arousal in the past?

I find this to be a very interesting, if slightly unsettling, topic. I have had high levels of arousal in the past, but since I have been on this drug since I was 16, I feel that I have missed out on potential experiences of high arousal. I've read good things about gingko biloba, but also that it reacts with SSRIs. Do you have any suggestions for improving my libido? Thank you for your time.

As Robin said, this is something to discuss with your psychiatrist - sexual side effects are quite common with SSRIs, and it's something they will have heard before. You said that you're moving towards not taking the medication anymore, so it could be that time will solve this. Citalopram has a half-life of 35 hours, sure, but tapering off an SSRI can take weeks or months, and it can take quite a while for your body to go back to it's "default" state. There isn't really anything you can do that will improve your sex drive, unfortunately; that's something that's pretty much out of our control, but your psychiatrist may have some suggestions. One thing to remember though is that "never" is a very, VERY long time, and it's incredibly unlikely that your sex drive will be at this level (or any one level) for the whole of your life. It may seem that way now, I know, but the possibility of that is almost zero. The best thing you can do at the moment is be patient, even though that might be tough.
