I understand that the chances of my girlfriend being pregnant are small. She is on birth control (even though she missed a pill the week that we had sex) and I used a condom (although--stupidly--we kept going for a couple minutes after I finished) and also, she had period-like bleeding and cramps during her normal time for her period. However, I have been freaking myself out the past couple of weeks because she had light spotting to heavy bleeding 4-7 days after we had sex, and then I found out about implantation bleeding, and that coupled with the fact that we kept going for a couple minutes after I ejaculated has been scaring me. Now I have read about decidual bleeding and that some girls confuse it for their period, and that's scaring me more. So I guess what I'm most nervous about is the fact that we kept going a couple minutes after I ejaculated, she missed a pill that week, and the bleeding 4-7 days after. I think I'm overreacting though because of the fact that she had period like bleeding during her normal time, and she took a pregnancy test 3 days before her expected period and it came up negative. Sorry for rambling, I think I'm just looking for thoughts on decicual bleeding, continuing intercourse after ejaculation (with a condom on), implantation bleeding, and missing a birth control pill the day that we had intercourse (she made it up the next day). Please help...

One thing to remember is that people who take the birth control pill often have bleeding or spotting at random times. This is common. I think the important thing here is to look at the facts: Your girlfriend's body did what she expected it to do, and she had a negative pregnancy test. ]

So, Robin, you think that the test would be accurate even though it was a couple days before her expected period? Most of what I have read online is that they won't be very accurate before the date of an expected period, but I don't know if those are regarding regular pregnancy test or early response pregnancy tests...

Pregnancy tests are accurate 14 days after a possible risk, or the first day of a missed period. Whichever comes first. Have you read this article? Peeing on a Stick: All About Pregnancy Tests It might help you understand how pregnancy tests work. Hope this helps!

Thanks Firefly, that article did help. So it turns out the test would've been taken exactly 14 days after intercourse, which I guess would mean it gives pretty accurate results. Also, she got what she 100% believes is her period two days later, which is her normal time to get it. I understand that the chances of pregnancy here are small. This whole "decidual bleeding" thing is what is scaring me. It seems as if there's no way to distinguish between a period and decidual bleeding. Do you have any input on that?

I don't have much input on that beyond what Robin and Heather have already said. While decidual bleeding can look like a period for some women, you should try to trust your girlfriend knowing her body and saying that what she experienced was a period. Too, the chances of a pregnancy resulting from what you described are extremely small, and you have had a negative test result. If it would make you feel better, you could see if your girlfriend would be up for taking another pregnancy test, but beyond that, my best advice would be to try to relax about this. Pregnancy is extremely unlikely in your situation. Hang in there!
