I have a question about missed periods and pregnancy possibilities. First a bit of background info: My girlfriend had been taking hormonal birth control (low dosage, Yasmin) for quite some time. Eventually she decided that the did not like the ‘feeling’ that it gave her, so she was going to go off of it and try an alternative method next time she went to her doctor. In the meantime, we’ve decided to be extra careful with condoms, which wasn’t too difficult as we used them consistently while she was taking the pill as well. After she went off the pill, she had a normal period in the beginning of October. We continued to have protected sex with condoms. None broke, and they appear to have been used correctly. She hasn’t had a period since, and it’s been about 6 weeks, perhaps a bit more, since her last one. When her period was a week late, we got a pregnancy test and it came out negative. The period still hasn’t come, so she took another pregnancy test today. It came out negative. We last had sex on November 6, I think, so it’s been only 9 days since the last risk. I know 10 days is recommended, but I’m wondering how accurate these past tests could have been. We’re both students and obviously are quite stressed at the moment. She has been having some personal difficulties lately, and combined with academic stress and job stress, she is under a great deal of general stress. We both know that stress can put off menstruation, but I’m not sure for how long. She’s scheduled an appointment with her doctor for this coming Wednesday, and we plan to check another home pregnancy test if her period hasn’t arrived in the next few days. Can someone explain to me a little bit about what’s going on? What are our pregnancy risks like? How does general stress factor into this?

As long as you've used condoms for all encounters 100% consistantly and correctly, go ahead and trust the results of those two pregnancy tests. Your girlfriend's body needs some time to adjust and get back on its own rhythm. The pills had been controlling exactly when she bleeds and creating an entire artificial cycle; the body needs a little time to figure out what's going on and get back on track. Did she chart/keep tabs on her cycles before she started taking birth control pills? If so, she can expect to gradually fall back into the pattern she was in BEFORE the pills; if her cycles were irregular then, they'll likely be now. Give it a few months for things to get back on track, and keep on with the condoms. Buy as many pregnancy tests as you need, if they help your mind rest.
