My girlfriend really enjoys sex without a condom. I am a very nervous person when it comes to this sort of thing as I do not want to get my girlfriend pregnant. She told me, that when she started taking her birth control pill (Ortho Tricyclin Lo...months ago) that the doctor had told her that she would be able to have sex without the use of a condom (he was assured by my girlfriend that we are in a steady relationship and dont sleep around with anyone else). I guess my real question here is...how safe is birth control. Can I trust it, like she wants me to trust it? I dont know much about it...so its difficult for me...and I do not want to be in a bad situation because of sex. If birth control really does PREVENT the ability for my girlfriend to become pregnant...Then it would help to have input from many more knowledgable people out there. Thanks in advance for your honesty. BigNiner19

You know what? Women really, realy can't physically feel the difference, so long as extra lube is used with the condom (and on the pill, she's likely want extra lube anyway, since it often makes natrual lubrication scanty, condom or no). There just are not enough nerve endings in the vagina to feel something as subtle as a condom: even with intercourse, sensations are generally more a matter of a feeling of fullness, not subtle, specific sensations. So, if YOU only feel okay also using condoms, then YOU get to draw a line there. Is the pill alone effective? Yes. So long as it is used properly and taken on time, it is highly effective. Very, very. But it's not foolproof, nor is it 100%. And healthy sex between people means both partners feel safe and comfortable: if you need condoms too to feel that way, so be it.

So it is pretty safe to have sex without a condom when a girl is on birth control?

Per pregnancy, so long as she is taking her pills properly, yes, very much so. The pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, however, so if a couple has not been monogamously practicing safer sex for at least six months, and does not have at least two, full and negative STI screens, it is advised to wait to go without condoms until that is the case.
