Hi my girlfriend missed her period by about a month and we are starting to get worried. In the span of the last few weeks including today, she has taken 5 home pregnancy tests. Different kinds too, the most recommended, digital, standard, you name it, and all of the tests have tested negative. Should we see a doctor or is this normal?

If your girlfriend's period has been regular up until now, no, it isn't normal for it to be so late. However, a late period can be caused by a number of different things- stress, weight gain or loss, exercise habits, etc. The home pregnancy tests indicate that it's very unlikely that your girlfriend is pregnant, but it's probably a good idea for her to visit her gynecologist to make sure and figure out why her period is late.

This can be normal, once in a while, to skip a month or experience a late period. This might be due to different things, some of which are listed in the article below. If your girlfriend tested negative on more than two pregnancy tests and those were taken on the first day or more of her missed period, then it's pretty safe to assume that their results are accurate and that she is therefore not pregnant. However, if she does happen to miss her period frequently or if she goes several months without a period, then it might be worth telling this to our GYN so that they investigate the cause of her missed periods. Okay, then it's pretty safe to assume that your girlfriend is not pregnant.

hmmm the weird part is she has recently got random blood here and there and it seems like symptoms of pregnancy, yet the 5 tests say negative. it's weird...

Well, depending on whether that's mostly spotting or heavier menstrual bleeding, this could be ovulation spotting or just her having a very irregular menstrual cycle. Since it seems to worry her and given her random bleeding here and there, I'd suggest discussing that with her GYN at her next visit. I think that would be your best bet.

Patego: All five of the tests were after the time that a pregnancy test would be acurate - you really can say that they are. If you both are still worried, despite the 5 tests, then it's best to just have her get a blood test to confirm - but it's really not needed at this point. It's really not abnormal to have some spotting between periods, especially when she missed one. If it begins to be a recurring problem, she'll want to speak with a doctor just to make sure everything's okay.

well does it matter when she took the hpt? I've heard the first urination of the morning, not to drink water beforehand, etc. Or do all hpts detect hcg no matter what time you take it?

A test taken after a period should have arrived will be accurate. It's better to test in the morning, especially if testing as soon as possible after a risk, but with so many tests giving the same result, it doesn't matter what time of day she took them. She's had 5 negative results; she is not pregnant.
