How many of you girls crave stuff when you have your period? I do >_> Right now I'm desperately craving a chocolate. Honestly, I feel pregnant! Why is this and what do I do? Do I go for it? (though I'm on a diet... )

Whenever I get my period, I crave fruits, specifically citrus fruits like oranges, like crazy. Normally, I love fruits, but when I'm on my period I HAVE to have them.

Chocolate forsted apples...you know, that actually sounds pretty good! What I wouldn't give to have that chocolate right now...I'm still craving... Stupid diet >_>. I usually crave sweets. One time when I had my period, I got it really bad. I grabbed every single sweet in the house and ate it. Cinnamon rolls, 3 types of chinese pastries, chocolate milk, toast with peanut butter and honey, chocolate bar... oh, it was all yummy. Everything tastes so much better when you're craving it. Oh, and the stomach ache that night...it was worth it So...why does this happen and should I go for it? To break the diet or not...

Actually, just to clear this up: the time just prior to your period is NOT when youa re most likely to get pregnant. In general, ovulation occurs sometime during the middle of your cycle, not during or just prior to your period. Check it out: On the Rag

Hmmm... I've never actually thought about cravings before, during, or after my period. I'll try and notice that when I'm expecting it! This should be interesting. I do get a bit pouncy and easily angered and bothered. I don't know if it's really PMS or if it's a mental thing...like: I'm getting my period...I am REALLY REALLY MAD! BUT anyway, I'll be on the look out from those cravings!

Nalio, I always have seen that with cravings, you have to give in a little. Otherwise you'll just eat way more and then give in!! So I suggest eating just a normal portion of some dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has good stuff in there for you too, so you won't feel as guilty. Match that up with some bananas, strawberries, and other yummy, chocolate-friendly fruits, and that should at least help with the craving.

I've always found that substituting carob for chocolate tends to take away the craving without any of the negative effects chocolate can have. Migraine sufferers are often advised to avoid chocolate, as it is believed to trigger migraines or make them worse. Either way, carob does not appear to contain caffeine, which is believed to make mestrual cramps worsen. (If anyone has any extensive information on carob, or current products that use it, I'd really appreciate you tossing some my way.)

Actually, I heard somewhere that chocolate helps with headaches. When I am cramping I eat a chocolate bar (even though I am lactose-intolerant) and when my boyfriend has migranes he grabs chocolate from the candy jar. Hm. I'm not sure. I drink herbal tea. I crave it like crazy. Chamomile, ginger, sassafras, anything that is good for menstrual relief. . I get a cup of tea, grab my boyfriend, lay on the bed, and have him massage my lower back. The thing I crave the most when I'm menstrating ... SLEEP. I don't get severe cramping but my lower back get's unbearable sometimes. Other than that, it's not so bad (anymore). I want fruit, too. Strawberries, cherries, watermelon, cantalope, you name it . . I want it. Ahh, Kiwi *drools* I eat a lot of toast, too. With a very VERY small amount of butter, sprinkled with a heavy amount of sugar and a fairly good amount of cinnamon. mm.

Chocolate, definitely. And teriyaki chicken. Sometimes pizza.

I crave chocolate, sweet foods in general and during some really rough months, all the fatty, greasy fast food I ordinarily wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Things like McDonald's 'chicken' nuggets. I'll eat the chocolate and sweets and sometimes I'm able to stay away from the fast food, but if I've just got too much to handle even without the extra effort of ignoring a bad craving, I'll eat a little and not stress over it too much. I eat heart-healthy the rest of the time anyway.

I am so weird with food when I'm on my period. I crave chocolate... obviously the norm... but I also tend to get this really strong desire for lobster. Strangest part, I don't even like lobster. I actually got my dad to go buy one to split with me one month, and after one bite, I wanted to puke it up and then eat more. It's so weird. I also tend to crave smoothies, but I want them heated up, which doesn't make any sense, but what does when you have mood swings? And as far as the fried food and sweets, both of which I usually love, one week a month they are YUCKY!

I asked my school nurse about this the other week. the reason you all crave chocolate at your time of the month is that it releases the serotonin and it gives you a sugar induced high. It raises your blood sugar and helps with the pain because you don't notice it because you're so hopped up on sugar for a while. I used to get cravings for chocolate quite alot on my period but i managed to fight that one and stopped because i was putting on weight. I also used to and still do get massive cravings for Mayonnaise when i'm on my period. I don't eat eggs, i think theyre icky and slimy and just awful. i will eat them in things like cakes though that's not the point. I crave mayonnaise because my body wants the protein from the eggs and it doesnt usually get it as a general rule. I get plenty of protein elsewhere though from chicken and turkey and battered fish. The rest of the time i can't even look at mayonnaise or eggs because it just makes me feel really sick but when i'm on my period i can eat the stuff like its yoghurt!

I crave sugary things when my period comes. There's a study who shows that many woman craves chocolate. I can't really say quite why because it doesn't say it.

I crave a lot of junk food. Greasy college pizza, chocolates (when I'm not even a sweets person), anything doughy. Just recently I found myself eating 4 dinner rolls in one go!! Haha. Funny thing is, after satisfying my craving, I end up not eating pizza for the rest of the month. Oh well.

Wow! Right now I'm PMSing, but I have a HUGE, ENORMOUS craving for vegetables!! I just ate a whole container of zuchini (and boy, have I ever enjoyed zuchini so much?), ate a whole container of asparragus in the afternoon, "chayote" for lunch, and now I called my mother because she's at the store and I want her to get me more zuchini and eggplant! Yummy!!! I'm calling her like crazy to see if she can get me artichokes too! This is so much better than craving chocolate! And the best part is that with this particular diet, I can eat as many vegetables as I want! And now I feel hyper and happy! Who ever knew you could get a vegetable high?
