A few days ago I had a simple surgery. I was put under IV anesthesia. About halfway through the procedure I broke through the anesthesia and had a severe panic attack before they were able to put me back under. I remember what must have been no more than a few seconds of being aware.

I remember something tight around my neck and something uncomfortable in my mouth. I wanted to move to defend myself, but I couldn't. Having PTSD from trauma including oral rape and being strangled, this was extremely scary. Since then I've been on a high dose of painkillers and have been mostly dissociated. Right now I'm staying in the house I was abused in as a kid, which is usually triggering anyway.

I feel retraumatized. What should I be doing to take care of myself?

I'm so sorry this happened, polyprotic, but I'm afraid that this is outside our expertise and scope as a service.

I'd have expected that after this, the hospital or surgery center would have referred you to help with this. Did they not offer you any kind of referral after what happened? (Especially since they also gave you painkillers, where I'd assume they'd have extra concern about post-surgical self-care?)
