We've had some users lately who have been grappling with some really hard events, processes and feelings. I know too, that for a lot of people, the inter holidays can be tough emotionally.

We all take care of ourselves in different ways because we're different people, but sometimes we might feel like we just not know how, or ways we've used in the past stop working as well as they used to. When that happens, it can help to try some new things, borrowing some ideas from others in how they take care of themselves, or being reminded by what others do of something you've done before that has helped, but which you've forgotten about.

So, what are the ways you take care of yourself and comfort yourself when things are tough?

Let's start a running list and all help each other. I'll toss a few of mine to get us started:

I take a long walk.

I listen to the music that I know makes me happy and reminds me of good things and good times in my life.

I do something very silly, like making up a silly song or dance, or twirling around the house with my pug.

I get some extra sleep or take a nice, hot bath.

I call a friend and ask to talk.

I make something for myself or someone else, whether that's a sewing or photography project, something written or a meal (baked goods: always helpful).

I spend extra time on something basic I'd otherwise rush, like sweeping the floor, washing my face, brushing the cat.

I do something creative.

I let myself cry.

I write a letter: to myself, to someone else I am having tough feelings about, to the world. I often don't send them, I just write them.

I go on a long trail ride with my horse, when I can.

I do mind numbing but difficult school work that requires me to concentrate on that but not much else.

I read a book or books that aren't in any way related to whatever I'm sad about.

I go somewhere to be on my own or seek out friends, it depends on how I'm feeling at the time and why I'm upset.


As well as pretty much all of the things on the list above!

I write in my journal.

I read an old, favourite book (I have a whole stack of comfort-books just for that occasion).

Or I watch comfort TV: old episodes of Buffy or Dawson's Creek always cheer me up.

There are some household chores that I find calming, such as folding and ironing laundry.

I bake.

I go for a run.

I listen to music that I find comforting.

I watch movies with characters that kick *** (literally or otherwise).

I do something small but nice for someone else -- make brownies for my coworkers, mail my sister a just-because greeting card, buy a homeless person a sandwich.

I clean. (You can tell when I'm stressed out because my place is spotless!)

I rant and rave in my journal.

I wear fuzzy clothes, like pajama pants and soft hoodies. They make me feel safer and more secure.

I actually listen to some really angry music, something defiant. It helps me vent. I have an emotional relationship with some music.

I go for a drive and blast my stereo

I write in my blog

I love on my puppy dog Trixie

I try and do something constructive that requires concentration, such as studying or writing a paper for school.

I think about how it will be when things finally do get better.

And if I'm really struggling, I call my sister and just cry or scream. Whatever I need to do.

I cook something exciting and difficult, so I have to focus. Then I share my creation with friends, or random people in my dorm's lobby :]

I do something to take care of myself, like washing my face.

I work on school work.

I research something interesting on wikipedia.

I take a hot or cold shower depending on my mood.

I read.

I dance alone in my room.

I watch a TV Show/Film/Etc.

I read.

I masturbate.

I call my boyfriend or sister, or if they're with me at the time I snuggle and hug them respectively.

I eat chocolate or something else tasty.

I make sure to complete my morning routine so I know I've done something to take care of myself that day (I'm particularly pleased when I remember to brush my teeth, as I really don't want to lose them).

I cry.

I sleep.

I listen to music.

I pet the cat.

I go to sleep

I cuddle up with my cat

I go in and stare at my new mousie on her wheel

I write

I cry for a while

I grab my old teddy bear

I run, or toss a ball in the air-almost anything physical works

I do absolutely nothing, and enjoy it
