From the college I attended (which right now I'm frankly embarrassed to be associated with) comes an incredibly sad story of a student threatened with expulsion/disciplinary action for speaking out about how poorly the university handled her report of sexual assault.
Before I moved from the area I volunteered at the local rape crisis center, and in our training we learned a lot about how the administration had put policies in place that made the number of sexual assaults on campus seem low... but this was basically because the policies discouraged students from reporting any rapes or assaults.

My heart goes out to this woman and all of the students at UNC who don't even feel comfortable coming forward in the first place. I really hope that the backlash over this issue causes some big changes at UNC but I don't know how much I can really expect.

People will vote with their feet. The more it is known when bad things happen, the less they happen, eventually. Sometimes it takes a while, but it will happen, Eventually.

This is so horrible. It's amazing that this was known by the rape crisis centre, at least it means that there have been people hoping for a public scandal like this to bring the practise to light.

I'm so pissed off at organisations silencing internal reports of sexual abuses.
