I'm not sure how much it's been reported on in other countries but there's been a lot of debate lately about Ireland's abortion laws (or lack thereof... our government has a serious problem of wanting to avoid the issue entirely) because of Savita Halappanavar, who died after being refused a termination (there's an article about it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20321741). I generally try not to be one of those people who's ashamed of where they live, but it's unbelievable how far behind nearly every other country in Europe we are when it comes to things like this.
Something that upsets me about it is the hypocrisy of a lot of people here who argue that we don't need abortion in Ireland because anyone who needs one can just go to the UK where it's legal, but that's not much good to you if you can't afford to travel.
No worries, TheCraneWife This issue is a huge deal.
Enlarging on what you wrote above, I think that an extra very important point is that people with less secure immigration statuses in Ireland can't travel anywhere else to access abortion. So, not only is it seriously restricted for those with financial/work/family difficulties, it's actually impossible for some people in Ireland to access safe and legal abortion. I was shocked when I read that recently and realised I'd never thought of it. I think it's so important that (general) we don't forget people when we're having these discussions: the people with opinions you describe above are just hideously wrong.
