Hello!

So, I just tried to send my friend (who is training at the Airforce Academy in Colorado) an article from Scarleteen, but this website is blocked.

It bothers me that they sensor so many different programs and websites on their campus. It really does.

BUT... I was wondering if you had a way around that. Is there a way that she (or anyone else living in an area where Scarleteen's address is blocked) can still access the content?

Thanks!

First of all, I find it really disturbing that an American college (even a military one) is blocking ANY website, much less an educational one.

Is this only at the schools public computers, or does it include the WIFI that they have in their rooms?

That being said, I don't know of any way around it, but I know that Heather did write a book a couple years ago. If she can't access the site, sending a copy of that may be a decent alternative. She still wouldn't be able to use the forum, unfortunately, but it should still have some great info.

Too, it could be that they only allow access to certain websites during training but remove those restrictions during the school year. just a thought.

You could perhaps copy and paste the article into an email if you know her email address to get around the block even if it is only temporary.

Just saw this, and what I'd say -- especially as the person who publishes this content and has gone to legal bat for it before around censorship -- is for your friend to ask that the block be removed directly, if she's up for that.

In other words, to say she is trying to access an educational health site and it is blocked, and to ask it be unblocked.

Mind, I also always recognize not everyone will feel able to do that, and understand that, but at the same time, it's really how these things change, and to my knowledge, most of the time when folks have taken that approach, the site has gotten unblocked by whomever blocked it.

I know that this site is also blocked when accessed via "Ultrasurf" a program I used to use to get AROUND the blocks at school.

So, maybe write the school and/or whoever runs that program?

To give anyone with this stuff a little inspiration, Pakistan -- as in, the gov't of that country, full-stop -- blocked Scarleteen a few months back (with a host of other sites).

Some folks got a news story up in a major news outlet about it there, and that block managed to get removed within a mere week or so. And that's in Pakistan, and with a government, so. [Smile]

Cool! And I'm not personally worried, as I know that Scarleteen isn't blocked at school when not using ultrasurf (which has been banned because it opens the computer up to viruses which I didn't know before).

I'll suggest that for her, if she is up to jumping through all of those hoops. I'm not even sure where she would start in such a big organization...

I also know that they've blocked some other random stuff. They blocked the Victoria Secret website for "provocative images," and Skype.

It is blocked on their WiFi I think. They all have tablets that they had to buy, but they are "government machines," and they have to use their network.
