Prop 85, a proposed ammendment to the California State Constitution, would have forced the parents of unemancipated abortion-seeking teens to be notified of the medical procedure at least two days beforehand. A record of the procedure would then be kept permanently on file for posterity.

The results are in, and the "No" vote won with a scarily-thin 3% margin.

Knew the margin was going to be like that, but thank GOODNESS the votes fell on the right side.

(And I confess I wept like a big ol'baby last night when Nancy Pelosi won her seat: having a woman be house speaker for the first time is such a fantastic historic moment.)

In other election-related news, South Dakota rejected the abortion ban!

And Arizona became the first state to reject a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman (the same amendment would also take away civil unions and domestic partnerships, so it definitely was not a "gays only" issue).

Hooray! I live in AZ and voted no on that proposition and am very happy with the results.

Nice to be an CA, AZ or SD resident today, I bet!

Always such a cool, cool thing when you can really feel how much your vote matters.

Yeah, but Prop 83 passed here in CA and that's bad news. *sigh*

Prop 83, dubbed "Jessica's Law" by supporters, proposed changes to the prosecution and sentancing of sex offenders. It included proposing GPS satellite tracking of all offenders, and barring them from being or living within 1,000 feet of a school or park. It's also seeking to significantly increase sentance terms and fines.

Even though it was approved by far, it was overriden until the federal court can determine whether or not such a proposal would be unconstituitional (duh.).
