(If this isn't appropriate, or is in the wrong place, feel free to move/delete it)

I recently became aware of the I AM COMING Campaign. They're trying to do something about the hundreds of thousands of women who are stuck in the sex trade. I thought it was a very good cause, and wanted to make other people aware of it. They have a Facebook group, and a Myspace page, as well as a website: I AM COMING

I know the name can have an odd connotation with a campaign like this, but what they mean is that we are coming to help the girls that are stuck in slavery, and we are coming to get the traffickers.

I'm not trying to do advertising or anything, and I'm not at all affiliated with them. I just want to raise awareness. Hope this is ok.

Feel free to discuss your thoughts...

Here's the thing: I will give you $1 million to find someone that WANTS to be in the sex trade.
A lot of people are trapped in this awful, scarring business: either due to lack of money, of perhaps they are actually forced to do it by someone (as in human trafficking).
Many of us here are victims of sexual assault or rape; and it could be argued that paying prostitutes is a from of sexual coercion. In the case of those who are forced into prostitution as sex slaves by pimps, it's full-blown rape.
Can you imagine suffering that time and time again? And having to pretend to enjoy it?
This kind of thing should NEVER be made to seem necessary to ANYONE.
I'm adding this cause to all the forums I'm a part of, including the one I run (link in my sig).

Just one?

(Let's not get sidetracked here, lol...

I can't be sure if you're joking or not Jay_d, so I'll just say: I think Smileyjoseph said that to illustrate that the sex trade is a horrible thing that no one wants to be a victim of. $1 million is a lot of money to a student, so I think he picked this amount to show that he really doesn't think it's possible to find someone who actually really wants to be traded as a commodity for the sexual pleasure of others.

If you are joking, then ok, no harm done.

Also, Smileyjoseph, if I interpreted your $1 million comment wrong, please feel completely free to correct me)

Don't worry, I don't have $1 million. It's supposed to be the 'impossible task' thing. And here was me thinking that was obvious.

Oh, I figured that was your intent... but it was phrased as a bona fide offer.

'n it just so happens that I've met the person. She charged a whopping $0.01 last I heard.

Don't think she needed that kinda money all too bad. [Wink]

Just need to make a reminder here-- a lot of this hinges on what you define as a "sex trade"-- I mean, you could argue that someone who makes their own porn and sells it is engaging in a sex trade, or someone who offers certain types of massages that might be perceived as sexual, etc.

I think that making rhetorical statements like "I'll pay $1 million to see a woman who WANTS to be in the sex trade" can actually distract from the real issue, which is the huge number of women (and some men) who are exploited and, as has been pointed out, undergo regular, systematic rape as result, because it will inadvertently deflect attention from the people who need help to the people who don't. You will always find some people working as sex workers who do so willingly, but, as I am sure you will all agree, it's far more important to concentrate on those who are being exploited.

So, maybe we can get back on track here, by looking at ways in which we might be able to help women in the sex trade industry who don't want to be there, and/or are forced into it.

This is a nice link, blysse: thanks for adding it.

Hopefully, as they develop, they'll add some more outside links and some reading, as well. It's SUCH a big issue, with so many complex facets, and there are some really excellent sources out there to increase and inform awareness.

Oh, wow.. those videos had me so emotional. Thank you so much for bringing this here, blysse.

I'm angry that this is allowed to happen. More than anything, I'm angry that this is how I had to find out about it. Who cares about Tom Cruise or Kramer? Give me some news.

I'll definately keep an eye on their campaign, and buy a couple rings to give out.

I introduced this at www.alturasforums.com, and actually I was disappointed - it got mixed reception. The main concern seemed to be the lack of info available, and even though I thought there was quite a bit, if anyone finds some more stuff on these guys I'd be grateful to know where. [Smile]
