My friend has been in an abusive relationship. She isn't entirely sure if she's been emotionally abused as well as physically. What constitutes emotional abuse?

Emotional abuse includes behaviours like insulting a partner, threatening or intimidating them (or their family or friends), isolating them from friends and family, shaming them, and basically using non-physical methods to control their behaviour. Like other forms of abuse, it's about one person having power over the other.
Has your friend seen the Abusive Partner Checklist yet? Many of the things on that list are forms of emotional abuse.
