Hey all,

I'm still traveling around Asia and I recently found myself in a situation that needs Scarleteen advice.

I am currently based in China, but I just left the county to go on vacation in the Philippines for 2 weeks. I just realized that I forgot my bc pills when I landed! I was suppose to start a whole new pack when I arrived in the Philippines, but I forgot to put it in my bag. I tried to get it mailed to the Philippines, but no one would do it because it involves medication :-(

At this point, I may just have to wait until I return to China, but this means that I'll be missing 2 weeks worth of medication. Like I said earlier, I was suppose to start a new pack anyway so it's not like I'm halfway through or anything. But it still concerns me.

Are there any hormonal side-effects in missing the pill for that long? I always use condoms for double-protection (my boyfriend is traveling with me), so I am not worried about any pregnancy risks. I'm more concerned about health side-effects considering that my body is pretty used to the pill at this point (been taking it for years).

Any advice?

Thank you so much in advance!

No, there is no health risk associated with stopping hormonal birth control.

What you'll just want to be aware of is that this will mess with your cycle a bit and you should be prepared for some spotting as well as a wonky withdrawal bleed or two once you start taking the pill again.

And, of course, you'll want to continue using condoms as back-up until you've been back on your pills at least a week.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I also take the pills for hormone imbalance issues so I just want to make sure I do this right: when I return to China, should I start the new pack immediately or should I wait out for the next cycle to take it?

My hunch is to take it immediately, but I want to double-check with you guys. I just want to re-introduce the bc pill in my body the best way possible.

Thank you again!

You can start taking it as soon as you get back to China, there's no need to wait.
