I have been on Aviane for about a year now and am pretty good about taking it on time. On May 21 my boyfriend and I had sex no condom and that following monday on my placebo pills I had a period. However this period was different the flow was normal but much more tissue than normal. I had the period for about 5 days. He and I havent had sex since the 21st (LDR). So for the next pack of pills I was pretty good about time except for one night i passed out on the couch and missed my 7pm pill time but took it that night around 10. A day before my placebo pills (sat. 23) i began dark brown spotting and it has progressed slightly to bright red but not normal flow however my withdrawal usually doesn't begin til Tuesday morning. My question: Is it possible that the spotting i got before my placebo pills is implant bleeding even though i haven't had sex in the past 6 wks? I don't know if spotting is normal the day before placebo pills and what causes the spotting.

In the past year on aviane I have never had the amt of tissue I had in mays period and the spotting that occured this cycle and it has me worried.

I guess I just need information. Thanks for your website its been lots of help as I've gotten wiser with my contraceptives.

Even with hormonal birth control, withdrawal bleeds can have some variation, and I don't hear you describing anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes the lining of the uterus (which is most of what actually comes out of the body during a period or withdrawal bleed) is more liquid, sometimes it has more clumps. And there can be quite a lot of variation in the colour of the bleeding, or the heaviness of flow- really, our bodies aren't entirely predictable and these things do vary from cycle to cycle.

Implantation bleeding is quite rare, and if you've been taking your pills on time (a few hours either way is not an issue) then pregnancy is unlikely to begin with. Spotting happens with the pill sometimes - it is a pretty common side effect - and again, it doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary to me. But if you're concerned you can absolutely take a pregnancy test for the peace of mind.
