I switched recently from the Marvelon brand to Tricyclen Lo in attempt to reduce my break through bleeding, I was wondering if switching brands would be cause for having a second form of protection for a while and for how long?

As long as you made a smooth transition from one to the other; that is, started the new one when it would have been time to start a new pack of the old one, you should be fine. It's never a bad idea to use a second birth control method just in general. If you're concerned about any reduction of protection after the switch, doubling up on methods for one cycle would get you through that transition.
