I was just wondering..

I am going to be starting the birl control pill, and I was wondering how long it takes a birth control pill to start being effective as in how long does it take for it to start preventing pregnancies?

It depends on when you start taking it. If you start the first day of your period, or the Sunday after your period begins, it's likely to be effective within a week. Starting any other time in your cycle means that it can take up to a full pack to be effective.

However, because it can take a while to get into the habit of taking a pill at the same time every day, and because different people react slightly differently to the hormones, we always recommend that no matter when you start, you wait for one full pack before relying on the pill for birth control. So, you'll want to use a back up method such as condoms for that whole first month. (Plus, the pill doesn't protect against STIs, so condoms are a good idea regardless, until you and your partner have been monogamous for at least six months and each had a full clear STI screening.)

Thank you!

I do have one other question. I had sex last night and we used only a condom, and it may have slipped, but not sure. I started my birth control today. Should I go out and get emergency contraception or shoudl I be ok becasue I took birth control today?
