So, me and my boyfriend are physically monogomous, have been together for two years, and were each other's first sexual partners, so we don't, from what I understand, have too much to be fussed about in the way of STIs.

However, I do know that if you've ever had a cold sore you can pass on herpes through oral sex (this is right, yeah?).My boyfriend is relatively confident that he's never had a cold sore, while I'm not really sure if I have- I can't remember ever having one.

So. Given that they're passed on via a virus, which stays in your system forever, is there some blood test or something you can have done to see if you've had one?

(And by the way- thanks so much for the awesomeness that is this site [Smile] )

Cold sores are a symptom of Herpes, just to be clear: if someone has cold sores, they have oral herpes. And yep, the virus can be transmitted via oral sex, kissing and other intimate contact. It is MOST likely when a sore is present or forming, but more rarely, can still be transmitted without.

You can be tested for Herpes antibodies: you don't need to have an active sore to get a test. But if neither of you ever remember having one, you could probably also each just ask your parents if you ever had them as children.

(And you're welcome! Thanks for the thanks!)
