So, here's my story:

I had sex for the first time last December. Before then, my periods were pretty regular at every 5 weeks. Occasionally it would be sooner or later than that, but only by a few days besides one instance where it was around 7 weeks .. probably because of my grandpa's death and my stress level. After I had sex for the first time, my cycle went nuts. I didn't have a period until 8 weeks after. From then, my periods were about 8 weeks apart until one came at 5 weeks. The next period after that was once again at 8 and now I'm going on week 8 or 9 with no period. I haven't had sex since that first time because it showed me that I really wasn't prepared for it.

Do you have any input as to why my cycle went crazy? Has anyone experienced a similar situation?

I just turned 19 and started my first year of college in August. Overall, I'm stressed but it's not anything that I can't handle. I lost my grandpa in August of 2012 but otherwise everything has been pretty normal in my life. I've tried to start exercising more routinely multiple times throughout the past year but I haven't been able to stick with it because I'm busy with work and school.

Thank you!

We really can't possibly know this for sure, but we do know engaging in sex doesn't change menstrual cycles.

Have you yet started your reproductive healthcare, like an annual exam or your pap smears? If so, the person to talk to about your periods is that healthcare provider, who can help you figure out if there's anything to be concerned with here.

Certainly even every five week, and certainly every 7, 8 or 9 are all atypically long cycles, but that can be someone's normal with no health issues, or due to a health issue or concern.

Everything else has been the same ... lengths of my periods have stayed the same and they haven't gotten lighter or heavier. My health is the same and I haven't had any problems or anything. I just thought it was weird that my cycle changed lengths.

I haven't started reproductive healthcare. I haven't been to the doctor in probably 2 or 3 years besides a cardiologist which is a scheduled yearly appointment.

So, sounds like now would be the perfect time to start. You need to start that preventative healthcare anyway, particularly given you engaged in sex, and you also have questions you want to ask someone who can give you the information you need. [Smile]

Do you know where to seek out that kind of healthcare? If not, happy to help you with that.

Yep, I know where to go and how to do that. I just thought I would ask and see if it was really something I should be cautious about because it's been almost a year of the same thing.

Thank you, Heather!

I'd say it's worth asking about during your visit, but I would also not sweat it.
