Hi, so I have been on the pill zoely for almost three months. The last time I had sex was about a week ago and all the times I have had sex have been protected with a condom and pull out (which I know is unnecessary - but my bf is paranoid). Anyway I take my pills on time perfectly at 8 pm, but this morning I went to the bathroom and had some withdrawal bleeding which was moderately heavy and moderately light in color. For about two days prior I have had food poisoning so I am wondering is that what causes withdrawal bleeding? Is withdrawal bleeding anything to worry about (I have no pelvic pain or anything) ? Since I'm about a week and a half away from my placebo week do I just skip my period? And purely for educational purposes, if someone does have unprotected sex and misses a pill a few days after - how long after does the missed pill incident have to occur after for pregnancy not be a consideration/worry? Thanks xx

Sorry we missed this one, gmhomey.

Withdrawal bleeding is the term used for the "period" one gets during the placebo period of the pills. It sounds like you're talking about breakthrough bleeding?

If so, breakthrough bleeding tends to be light spotting, not heavy bleeding, so if you have been having heavy-bleeding mid-cycle and have not missed any pills, I'd check in with your doctor about that. Not because of pregnancy: clearly, you becoming pregnant using three methods is way beyond unlikely. I'd check in just because of possible food poisoning all by itself, and yes, being very ill can throw your cycles out of whack. If you're throwing up a lot, you may be starting your withdrawal bleed because of not digesting pills.

We can never say pregnancy is never a worry with any one method of birth control because none are ever 100% effective for all users, even in perfect use. One missed pill, especially if it is made up as soon as it is missed, through, is at most going to bump a user to the typical use rate for the pill (91% in one year) from the perfect use rate. If that.
