So my boyfriend and I give each other oral once a week. He started doing it to me before I to him. Neither of us were sexually active before we got into this relationship and he said his mom would have told him if she had an std and my mom would have told me if she had one. Neither of our parents had stds before we were born but each time we give oral, our throats hurt a little. This time his hurt for three days but faded each day. My throat hurt a little the night of. Then it got slightly worse the next day but not too bad. That night it hurt even more but was more annoying than painful. The next morning, my tonsils were swollen with white/yellow bumps on them with the back of my mouth all red. My nose was slightly stuffy and I kept coughing. Also I mat or may not have a fever. Could I have an std?

Not knowing either of your STI status via testing, it's impossible to say, As well, even people who don't have any STIs can still get things like bacterial or fungal infections from sex.

There's really no way of saying if these symptoms are about sexually transmitted illness or, say, something like a summer flu, cold or strep throat.

But with swollen tonsils and a persistent cough, the best thing you could do is just check in with a healthcare provider and let them have a look.

I'm not able to get to a doctor. We have no money and I don't have a ride to see one anyway. But based upon neither of us being sexually active with anyone else our entire lives and our parents not having STDs when we were born, how likely is it for either of us to have caught one from one another? Thank you!

If neither of you have ever had any kind of sexual contact with someone else, the risks of most STIs are low to none. The lone holdout would be oral herpes, which is very common, often undiagnosed, and usually transmitted in childhood, not by sexual contact.

But really, no one can tell you what this is or isn't without you being seen, and with swollen tonsils, healthcare is usually really important. STIs aren't the only things that can make us sick, after all, nor the only kinds of illness that require treatment.

If you want to give me an idea of where you are, I would certainly be happy to look into public health options you may have.

You can use that "contact us" button below, and just email your zip code.

If you can include anything you know about if your family has any public health assistance already -- like Medicaid or Medicare, for example -- that would be helpful.
